After the national and export success of WZT-2 Mechanical plants “Bumar-Łabada” did not slow down. The Polish military had more and more T-72 tanks, so a newer kind of method safety car was developed based on the construction of the russian tank. This is how WZT-3 was created – a multi-purpose vehicle, which besides gained recognition, not only in Poland.
They are utilized for evacuation and method protection of vehicles on the battlefield, for assembly work utilizing the TD-50 crane, for electrical and gas welding. They are adapted for engineering work carried out utilizing a plowshare or pulling out buried equipment utilizing a main winch. If necessary, they will besides be utilized to evacuate wounded soldiers from the battlefield. And these are only the basic functions of WZT-3 – a vehicle which in 1989 went into the equipment of the Polish Army. A year later India was curious in the method safety of Polish production, which inactive uses respective 100 specified vehicles. Among another abroad users of WZT-3 in various licence versions are Serbia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Malaysia or Kuwait. Since last year the Ukrainian army has besides utilized them.
The first version of WZT-3 was created on T-72 chassis as safety for this kind of tank. In time, however, a modernized version of the car, WZT-3M, which met the safety requirements, began to be manufactured. Polish PT-91, Indian T-90S Bhishma and another equipment units, taking into account that the rigid lobby allows the evacuation of damaged vehicles with a weight of up to 50 t. The upgraded car has, among others, a stronger S-12U engine with a power of 850 hp (625 kW) or 1000 horsepower S-1000. maker Bumar-Łabada Mechanical Plant – emphasises that thanks to its advanced versatility and easy adaptation the vehicle can be utilized for various types of specialized method work, including chemical and firefighting. WZT-3 can operate in any climate at temperatures from -24 C to +50 C.
Weighting 40 t WZT-3 (war mass 42 t) can make a velocity of about 60 km/h on a paved road. In the field, it overcomes beards with a depth of 1.8 m and water obstacles up to 5 m deep. The operating scope of the car ranges from 200 km to approx. 600 km (with additional fuel barrels).
The main equipment of the WZT-3 is primarily a TD-50 retractable hydraulic crane with a burden capacity of 15 t and a adjustable arm (5,8–8 m) and 2 winches: main, mechanical with a burden capacity of 280 kN (840 kN after usage of a multidistrict) and hydraulic with a pull capacity of 20 kN. The truck has 360 by 90 cm blades, welding and electrical and acetylene cutting equipment, air compressor and drive assembly kits.
Examples of WZT-3 weapons (may vary depending on the versions and local upgrades) are 12.7-millimeter anti-aircraft large-caliber NSWT device weapon (stock of 300 pcs) and 81-millimeter smoke grenade launcher.
The Armed Forces Support Inspectorate informs that there are presently about 300 vehicles in the WZT household in the Armed Forces of Poland. Most of them are WZT-2, as WZT-3 was produced for the Polish Army in about 30 copies. Between 2019 and 2024 23 WZT vehicles were renovated and put into service. 3 more are in progress.
