Weather in Poland: Storms and Floods

In fresh days Poland has been haunted by violent storms which have caused many flooding and power outages. The most serious situation is in the Pahairian municipality in Podkarpacie, where soldiers of the Territorial Defence Army were directed to assist.

According to the data of the State Fire Service, 366 events related to the removal of storms were recorded in the Lublin Voivodeship, in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship – 179, and in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship – 44. A press spokesperson for Chief Chief State Fire Department Karol Kierzkowski reported that "intense work is inactive ongoing" in connection with the removal of the effects of Friday's rain, and by 6 a.m., the services had already taken 16 specified interventions.

IMGW issued first-degree warnings against storms for the north-eastern part of the country. Alarms of the first degree before storms are valid in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, in the districts of Augustów, Suwałki, Sejny, Olecko, Elk and Giżycko. The first-degree informing provides for conditions conducive to the occurrence of dangerous meteorological phenomena that may origin material losses and threats to wellness and life.

In Przemyśl, many streets were flooded, and city president Wojciech Bakun reported that the situation in the city was returning to normal. The Fire Department received over 70 reports of local flooding and flooding. All streets and viaducts are now mobile outside the crossing under the railway bridge from Sportowa Street, where both the Fire Department and the PWIK work.

According to the Central Statistical Office data, in 2020 there were 2344 weather events in Poland, including 1428 storms, 434 blizzards and 482 rains. Due to these events, material losses amounted to PLN 2.3 billion.

Poland is not the only country affected by weather phenomena. According to planet Meteorological Organization data, in 2020, 409 weather events in the planet caused the deaths of 14,000 people and material losses of up to $150 billion.

Therefore, it is crucial that we be prepared for weather phenomena and know how to behave in the event of a threat. We should besides be aware of precautions, specified as safety of windows and doors, disconnection of electrical devices from the grid and avoidance of flooding.
