On 10 April 2010, 96 people were killed in the plane crash of Tu-154M close Smolensk, including president Lech Kaczyński and his wife Maria, the highest commander of the Polish Army, the last president of Poland in exile Ryszard Kaczorowski, parliamentarians, as well as oppositionist in the times of the Polish People's Republic and activist of the NSZZ “Solidarity” Anna Walentynowicz. The Polish delegation was headed for 70th celebration.
