The construction of a modern rescue ship for the Polish Navy enters the next phase thanks to the cooperation of 2 shipyards. The agreement between the PGZ War Shipyard and SSN “Wulkan” will let the national manufacture to implement a key component of the unit’s hull. This is another example of involving Polish plants in strategical maritime programmes.
As agreed between PGZ War Shipyard a Stocznia Szczecińska “Wulkan” hull bow block ORP “Rescuer” will be established in Szczecin. The Volcano Shipyard is to be liable for prefabrication and assembly of the hull section, for the integration of the forward block, partial painting and installation of the main equipment, including azimuth propulsor, jet rudders and complete anchoring and mooring equipment. The ready module will then be transported to Gdynia, where the main construction of the ship under the Rescue Programme takes place.
The agreement was signed present on the territory of the Szczecin shipyard with the participation of Arkadiusz Marchewka, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Adam Rudawski, Provincial of West Pomerania, and Olgard Geblewicz, Marshal of the Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship.
– The commission of execution of the foreblock of SSN “Wulkan” is an expression of assurance in the competences of Szczecin shipbuilders, but besides a conscious choice – said Marcin Ryngwelski, president of PZZ of the War Shipyard during the ceremony. – We want Polish manufacture and Polish workplaces from Gdynia to Szczecin to benefit from this programme. erstwhile we build a rescue ship for the Navy, we show that Polish shipyards can work together and that this cooperation brings concrete results," added the head of the Gdynia shipyard.
For the Szczecin shipyard, participation in the program means entering the section of more advanced defence-related ship projects. The Company improvement Fund, which has ownership supervision of the Volcano, indicates that cooperation with the PGZ War Shipyard confirms the improvement of the plant's competences in fresh years and its gradual return to major industrial programmes.
Radosław Kowalczyk, president of Szczecińska Shipyard "Wulkan", spoke about signing a contract with PGZ War Shipyard, that it is simply a crucial minute for his plant, and assured that the Szczecin shipyardists have the competence and facilities to do this task.
The entrustment of part of the hull of the Szczecin shipyard is part of the planned production organisation and a solution commonly utilized in the modern shipbuilding industry. A akin model PGZ War Shipyard already uses at frigate program “Meaner”, where the front block of the first unit, ORP “Wider”, was built by CRIST shipyard.
For the construction of the second frigate, ORP “Burza”, Nauta Shiprepair Yard was involved. The separation of work between specialised plants allows for better usage of available production capacity, shorten implementation time and affect the competence of various industrial centres.
The consortium created by PGZ Shipyard, the Polish Armed Forces Group and the investigation and improvement Centre of the Marine Technology Centre is liable for the implementation of the project. Construction of the unit began in November 2025, and The keel under the ship was laid in February 2026..
The lifeguard will be nearly 100 m long and 19 m wide, 6500 t displacement and 6000 Mm range. The crew of the ship will have 100 people. On board the unit there will be a chopper landing ground, including submarines, hydrological and firefighting equipment.
The ship is intended to supply assistance to military and civilian units in the Baltic, but thanks to its specialized equipment it is intended to be a unit in peculiar to safe the rescue operations of submarines from ‘Orca’ programme. Launching the ship is planned for the second half of 2027, and the transfer to the Navy is due at the end of 2029.
