Krzysztof Śmiszek from Nowa Lewica calls again for the liquidation of the Institute of National Memory. In his opinion, the departure of Karol Nawrocki from the position of president of the IPN is simply a good time for specified a discussion. Will the government decide to close the institution?
New Left wants the IPN out. “Hundreds of millions of zlotys can be spent better”
Krzysztof Śmiszek, Euro MP of the fresh Left, referred to the vacancy in the position of president of the IPN after the resignation of Karol Nawrocki, who was elected president of the Republic of Poland. The politician thinks it's the right time to go back to the thought of liquidating the Institute.
"Nawrocki's election is simply a vacancy in the position of president of IPN. It is simply a good time to consider the liquidation of this institution, whose yearly budget is hundreds of millions of PLN" – wrote grin on platform X (formerly Twitter).
The politician stressed that “Poland has more crucial needs”, suggesting that the funds allocated to the IPN could be allocated to another purposes.
"IPN is to be liquidated". Left has been criticizing the institution for years
This is not the first time left-wing environments have called for the closure of the IPN. In 2024, Stanisław Wąątek, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of National Defence, on behalf of the Left, said directly:
"IPN is to be liquidated, we know how to do it, we only request to get the agreement and agreement of all our coalitions".
Vladimir Czarzasty, co-chair of the fresh Left, besides advocated the liquidation of the IPN and the Central Anti-corruption Office (CBA):
"As far as CBA is afraid with IPN, I think these institutions should be liquidated" He said.
The IPN budget is systematically reduced. Is that an introduction to liquidation?
In fresh years, the budget of the Institute of National Memory has been gradually reduced. Lewica MP Tomasz Trela reported that during the parliament gathering of the public finance committee it was decided to cut the IPN funds by over PLN 18 million. In total, the institution has already lost nearly PLN 70 million.
Will the next step be to destruct the IPN completely? There are discussions in government environments, but the final decision depends on the coalitions.
Summary
The fresh Left consistently seeks to liquidate the IPN, arguing this with advanced maintenance costs of the institution. However, the final decision depends on the ruling coalition. Is there a breakthrough in the coming months?
