The leaders of Russia and China, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, powerfully condemned the Israeli attacks on Iran on Thursday, calling for a solution to the conflict by political and diplomatic means," said Putin's advisor Yuri Uszakov at a press conference on Thursday.
"Moscow and Beijing share the view that the current situation... cannot be solved by force and can only be achieved by political and diplomatic means," said Uszakov.
"The most crucial precedence is to bring about a truce and to halt armed action. Strength is not a good way to resolve differences of opinion between countries," said Xi, quoted by the Chinese agency Xinhua.
Putin in turn confirmed Russia's willingness to play the function of mediator if necessary. According to Ushak Xi, he supported this idea.
The conversation lasted about an hour.
The Kremlin announced Thursday that Putin would go to China at the end of August to the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation on 31 August–1 September and to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of planet War II in Beijing. His visit, which besides includes bilateral talks, will last until 3 September.(PAP)
