Second circular of presidential elections will take place in the Czech Republic

January in Czech politics is marked by presidential elections. The first round, held on 13-14 January, selected 2 main candidates: erstwhile Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (35% of the vote) and General Petr Pavel (35.4% of the vote). The next vote will take place on 27-28 January.

Two candidates remained in the race for president of the Czech Republic. The fight between competitors is fierce, as the results of the vote indicate. He retired in 2018 and became active in political life. The candidate for president of the Czech Republic officially announced on 6 September 2022. Pavel runs the run under the motto “Let us reconstruct peace and order to the Czech Republic” (“Vraťme Česku řád a clid”).

In 2012, he registered a political organization called ANO 2011, proclaiming the slogan of fighting corruption and healing the political system, declaring his participation in the parliamentary elections. The improvement of the party's activities coincided with Agrofert's acquisition of the MAFRA media group, issuing among others 1 of the largest Czech newspapers "Mladá fronta Dnes". He rejects the allegations of fraud against him during his offices as ‘politically motivated’. It is worth noting that on 9 January 2023, a fewer days before the first circular of voting, he was acquitted by the court of first instance in connection with the fraud of EU grants. He announced that as president, he would not let the Czech Republic to engage in the war in Ukraine and not let mobilization. After the first round, he announced that he would effort to organize a kind of peace summit between Russia and Ukraine in the Czech Republic at the Prague Castle at the President's seat. Prime Minister Piotr Fiala did not sympathize with him, who spared no offensive words towards politics.
