On 14 July of that year, a solemn unveiling of the monument of the Volhyńska Rzeci was held, which stood in Domostawa, on the border of Podkarpackie and Lubelskie provinces. This monument is perfectly visible for drivers travelling via the S19 expressway, which runs right next to the monument.
Planting vegetation in the monument area
However, the situation may shortly change. The employees of the Podkarpackie branch of the General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) decided to plant vegetation in the area of the local Travel Service Centre, precisely at the tallness of the monument.
In fresh days, fresh plantings of trees have appeared on the road. They are now about 1 metre high, but can shortly scope respective metres, which effectively obscures the view of the monument for passing drivers and passengers.
Reaction of the Society of Lovers of Lviv and the Southeast Borders
The case gained publicity thanks to Margaret Zych, president of the Society of Lovers of Lviv and the Southeast Borders in Tarnobrzeg, 1 of the initiators of the monument construction. Zych claims that plantings are not accidental and suggests that the authorities may have reason to “close” the monument. The monument raised complaints and criticism from representatives of the Ukrainian number in Poland.
Controversies and interpretations
From the very beginning, the monument to the Volyn massacre aroused emotions and controversy. Its form and character were discussed and opposed by various social groups. The fact that the authorities have decided to plant trees in a place that may limit the visibility of the monument is interpreted by any as a deliberate action aimed at minimising its importance in public space.
Perspectives and the Future of the Monument
It is unclear what the destiny of the plantings will be and whether the trees will actually scope the tallness that will cover the monument. Much depends on the decisions of local authorities and further actions of the Society of Lovers of Lviv and South-East Borders, which can take legal or administrative steps to defend the visibility of the monument.
