On the memorial commemorating the tragic death of 2 Polish commandos in 2003, insignia of the Order of the Military Cross appeared in the Republic of Macedonia. The sergeant was honored with this distinction. Piotr Mikulowski and Sgt. Paweł Legentski, who died serving in this country as part of NATO operations.
On the scene of the tragedy that happened on 4 March 2003, a stone obelisk stood. The writing on it tells us they died here that day on the service of the sergeant. Piotr Mikulowski and Sgt. Paweł Legencki, Polish soldiers of PKW Macedonia. Both served in the 1st peculiar Regiment of the Commandos (now Commando Military Unit) from Lublin. This happened close Sopot on the border of the Republic of Macedonia and Kosovo.
Mines were planted by Albanians.
The task of 24 soldiers, who formed PKW Macedonia in the years 2001–2003 as part of the NATO mission, was to defend global observers and VIPs, as well as to designate landing sites for helicopters. They were besides liable for the region where 1 village – Kumanovo – was inhabited by Macedonians, the another by Lipkovo – by Albanians.
On March 4, 2003, 4 soldiers along with a local translator returned from a regular patrol. Their vehicle entered a mine trap, exploded 2 anti-tank mines planted by the Albanians. A massive detonation caused Honker to fly over respective meters and fall to the ground. 2 Polish soldiers were killed and 2 others and a translator were injured.
Both of the fallen commandos were decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Military Cross, the Silver Cross of Merit, and distinguished with an entry in the Book of Honor of the Minister of National Defence. Their assassins, 2 Albanians, were sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Insignia on the monument
22 years after the tragic death of Polish soldiers, a Polish delegation paid tribute to the fallen. Insignia of the Order of the Military Cross on the grave of soldiers was revealed by Brig. Gen. Jarosław Chojnacki, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operational Affairs of DORSZ. The ceremony was besides attended by representatives of the MON and the Veteran Centre for Activities outside the State Borders, the commander of the LII of the PKW change KFOR colonel Krzysztof Wieczorek, the commander of the LI change PKW KFOR colonel Andrzej Wasiluk, Polish diplomats accredited in the Republic of North Macedonia, as well as soldiers of the PKW KFOR and the Military Unit of the Commandos of Lublin.
– Sergeants Piotr Mikulowski and Paweł Legentski were the first peculiar troops to die after planet War II, bringing aid outside the country. It is very crucial and moving for me that soldiers of all changes of the PKW remember this place, care about them and cherish the memory of their predecessors. For respective years CW has meant the insignia of the Order of the Cross of the Military graves of soldiers – the cavalry of the Order of the Military Cross. This is simply a discrimination awarded for outstanding combat actions combined with exceptional self-sacrifice and courage during combat actions against acts of terrorism in the country or erstwhile utilizing the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland outside the borders of the country during peacetime. The idea, i.e. the "Memory of Order" project, was born in July 2021 in the Veteran Center for Education and Tradition. It afraid the organization of the ceremony of marking the insignia of the Order of the Military Cross of graves of fallen and dead bachelors. It was accepted by the then manager of this facility Colonel Stephen Głuszczak. To this day, 25 graves (of 51) of fallen soldiers were marked.
