The Russians again showed incompetence, causing a serious threat to their own citizens in Smolensk. On the night of 20 to 21 January, Putin's air defence unsuccessfully shot down a Ukrainian drone straight over residential buildings at a very low height. Soldiers did not foretell the consequences, and falling shrapnel caused many fires of housing and homes.
