On July 12, 1940, 10 months after German troops entered Poznań, the Monument of Gratitude was no longer in the city. The reconstruction of the Castle and the construction of a war bunker were already underway. Swastikas waved in the streets, and Nazis marched down Święty Marcin Street, renamed Schlossfreiheit. At that time, Adolf Hitler signed a decree on the reconstruction of Poznań. It was intended to be a model, Germanic city. Fortunately, the Germans did not manage to implement the plan. On February 23, 1945, Poznań was returned to Poland.
