In fresh days, officers of the Border defender Service (SG) in Rutce-Tartak and Gołdapi have made respective arrests of persons suspected of assisting in organizing illegal crossing the border from Lithuania to Poland. These matters fall within the broader context of intensifying Border defender activities at the east borders of the country, aimed at combating illegal migration and ensuring safety in the territory of the Republic of Poland.
Detention in the municipality of Szpiliszki
The first of the detentions took place in the municipality of Szypiliszki, where Border defender officers stopped a 24-year-old driver of a Ford vehicle on Polish registration numbers. As it turned out, this man worked with a 34-year-old Ukrainian citizen who organised an illegal crossing of the border from Lithuania to Poland for six Somali citizens. Foreigners did not have any papers enabling them to stay legally in Poland and were to be transported to the west of Europe.
The court decided to temporarily arrest both organizers for a period of 3 months. This is simply a decision to safeguard further proceedings and to prevent them from escaping or pursuing criminal activities.
Detention in the municipality of Puńsk
Another incidental occurred in Puńsk Municipality, where border guards from Gołdapi, supporting the activities of the Podlaskie SG Branch, stopped the Renault vehicle on Ukrainian registration numbers for road control. There were 4 Iraqi citizens inside the car. After the verification of the legality of the stay, it turned out that foreigners did not have papers authorising them to enter and legally reside in Poland. Iraqi citizens only had passes from the center for foreigners in Latvia.
The driver, a 38-year-old Ukrainian citizen, was besides arrested for a period of 3 months. This is another example of effective actions of the Border defender to counter illegal migration in Poland.
Detention in Rutka-Tartak municipality
Another halt took place in Rutka-Tartak Municipality, which was the consequence of a regular roadside inspection of a Toyota vehicle on Finnish registration numbers. The vehicle featured a 38-year-old Estonian citizen and 5 passengers, citizens of Tajikistan. The verification of the legality of the stay has shown that the citizens of Tajikistan only had passes from the centre for foreigners in Latvia and did not have papers entitling them to legally reside in Poland.
As a result, all travelers, along with the driver, were detained. These cases show the scale of the problem of illegal migration and the effectiveness of the Border defender in combating this.

Legal implications for helpers
Under current law, a word of imprisonment of up to 8 years is punishable for organising and assisting in organising illegal border crossings. In addition, administrative proceedings are initiated against foreigners detained for ancillary services, who have been legally resident in Poland so far. The intent of this procedure is to issue a decision requiring the return to the country of origin. In addition, they will be prohibited from entering the Schengen States for a period of 5 to 10 years.
Activities of the Podlaskie Border defender Branch
The Podlasie Border defender Branch, which operates these facilities, reported 246 detentions of aiders and organizers of illegal crossing the border this year. These actions are evidence of the effectiveness of border guards in the fight against illegal migration, which is 1 of the top challenges of modern border protection systems.
In summary, fresh detentions in the municipalities of Szypiliszki, Puńsk and Rutka-Tartak are further examples of effective actions of the Border Guard, whose officers, through their involvement, contribute to the protection of the borders of Poland and the full European Union against illegal migration.
