A decade ago, a tattoo in a prominent place could have cut off a military career. With generational change and labour marketplace pressure, the army eases the approach to appearance, attempting to reconcile discipline with individualism. However, despite the liberalisation of the rules, the limits stay clear: tattoos cannot present content commonly considered unacceptable.
In the first decade of the 21st century, the rules on the appearance of soldiers were unambiguous and restrictive in Poland. Although tattoos were not formally banned, in practice they could close the way to the ministry. Especially problematic were patterns seen on forearms or neck, in summertime uniform. Commander of 214 Light Infantry Company 2 of the Lublin Territorial Defence Brigade, Lt. Grzegorz Golianek, a soldier with an 18-year stint, remembers this very well: – I have tattooed full hands, but the first tattoos started only after many years of service. I made them erstwhile I was determined to spend my full future in the military. A twelve years ago, the tattoo was a real problem. Medical boards could reject candidates just due to the fact that they had tattoos. There was a belief that criminals had them due to the fact that they were utilized in prisons. This stereotype has persisted for a long time, says the officer. In addition, in 2015, the Ministry of National Defence tightened regulations, qualifying tattoos on the face, neck and forearms as disfigurement. For this reason, a healthy and professional candidate could be disqualified at the start.
Change your attitude
– erstwhile tattoos were just ugly, they were made just like that. But erstwhile they looked at them as art made by professional artists, their attitude changed. People started making projects that were thoughtful, consistent, with concrete meaning. And now they are perceived completely differently – he says about the evolution of paintings on the body commander 214 klp.
There was besides liberalisation of regulations. As the Ministry of Defence admits, this was a consequence to real social change. "Determining capabilities for individual types of military service in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland is carried out on the basis of a decree of the Minister of National Defence of 25 March 2024, (...) which contains a catalogue of diseases and disabilities which constitute a counter-insurgency for military service", the ministry informs. The key change came with the last Amendment of July 1, 2025. As stressed by the MON press office: "Posts of liberalisation of the qualifications of candidates for professional military service related to tattoos have been taken into account".
Today, the rule is clear: the specified fact of having a tattoo is not a contraindication to serve. Restrictions mainly concern their location and content. ‘In view of the expanding number of persons having tattoos in visible places and not emerging from their existing emotional-psychic disorders for candidates for professional military service, the only criterion of their inability is the possession of facial tattoos and front of the neck and/or tattoos containing content commonly considered unacceptable’, the MON informs. For the latter, an additional intellectual and psychiatric consultation is needed.
The rules besides specify exceptions. People with tattoos on their face or neck cannot service in typical sub-units, as in any specialities – including flying personnel, a navy or divers. At the same time – which was unthinkable a fewer years ago – tattoos on hands, including fingers, are no longer a contraindications to professional military service.
There are no official, public statistic on the number of soldiers with tattoos, but the military themselves agree that these are not exceptions. In each unit there will be many amateurs of these tiny works of art who have painted back or forearms. This trend is peculiarly visible among younger vintages.
Service record
Not only does the approach to tattoos change, but besides their character. Earlier, simple patterns dominated, present there are elaborate compositions – realistic portraits, conflict scenes, spiritual and patriotic motifs. For many soldiers, tattoo is not just an ornament, but a individual archive of experiences. – My hands have a reflected communicative of my life. I am a SERE teacher (a shorthand from the words Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Extraction – survival, avoidance, resistance, escape – referring to specialized military training preparing soldiers to operate in isolation, in enemy territory or in captivity – ed.), I deal with survival, so I have tattooed elements related to nodes, fire, survival. But there are besides symbols of the Fighting Poland, soldiers cursed, references to the Warsaw Uprising, to the Operation “Market-Garden”, a mountain motif due to the fact that I walk on mountains. It's not all random. We designed each tattoo together with my tattooer – says Grzegorz Golianek.
A akin approach, he emphasizes, dominates another soldiers. – Most wear patriotic tattoos, reflecting their attitude towards service. These are not random images, but symbols that carry a deep message. If individual tattoos symbols referring to the past of Poland, it means that he takes this service very seriously. That's why he decided to do something that would stay with him for life. – Commander 214 klp emphasizes that this is not fashion, but a declaration for life.
Borders of freedom
In spite of the liberalisation of the rules, the limits stay clear. MON defines ‘contents mostly considered unacceptable’ as those of an illegal, extremist, offensive or violent nature. Models infringing or likely to origin social harm automatically exclude the candidate.
In everyday service, tattoos are seldom a real problem. In most units, there is simply a regulation that as long as they do not violate the rules and are not ostentatically exposed in authoritative situations, they do not rise objections. During state ceremonies, parades or media contacts, soldiers frequently cover tattoos under long sleeves. In the field or combat activities, this issue falls to the background.
However, there is no shortage of critical voices. any elder officers believe that liberalisation can lead to blurry military ethos, as the army is no place to manifest itself. Change advocates say that professionalism does not depend on whether a soldier has a tattoo or not. As Grzegorz Golianek emphasizes, the tattoo has no effect on the combat value of the soldier. In the field of combat, training, experience and head are important. However, the lieutenant points out the recognition aspect: – Tattoo is simply a peculiar sign – he notes. It indicates that during the war a soldier captured in captivity may be subjected to peculiar torture due to patriotic tattoos on the body. specified highly drastic cases have late been reported among Ukrainian soldiers who have gone into Russian captivity.
Between tradition and modernity
The Polish army continues to balance between the request to keep discipline and the request to adapt to the realities of the 21st century and the expectations of fresh generations. Tattoos are 1 of the most visible symbols of this change. People raised in the culture of individualism, social media and greater freedom of expression are sent to the army. For them, tattoo is not an expression of rebellion, but a natural component of appearance. Therefore, the approach to appearance is no longer a substance of regulation only, but of human resources policy. For a young soldier, it is crucial not only to pay and the stableness of employment, but besides to be yourself.
The military competes for candidates with both another uniformed services and the private sector. An overly restrictive approach to appearance could importantly reduce the recruitment pool. Liberalisation so means not abandoning the rules but adapting them to modern times. As a result, the uniform remains a symbol of uniformity, but more and more often, individual stories written in ink hide under it.
