Rubio thanks Turkey for facilitating Russia-Ukraine talks

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during a telephone conversation with Turkish abroad Minister Hakan Fidan, thanked Ankara for accepting and facilitating possible direct talks between Russia and Ukraine, reported the State Department.

"The Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to Turkish abroad Minister Hakan Fidan today. The secretary thanked Turkey for accepting and facilitating direct talks between Russia and Ukraine, and welcomed the anticipation of an immediate ceasefire," said the statement.

In addition, Rubio and Fidan discussed the upcoming informal gathering of NATO ministers in Antalya and the importance of strengthening trade and defence ties between the US and Turkey.

Russian president Vladimir Putin previously proposed Ukraine to resume direct talks without preconditions in Istanbul on 15 May. The head of state did not regulation out that the parties could scope a ceasefire agreement during appropriate negotiations. Russian President's spokesperson Dmitri Pieskov said Russia is determined to seriously search ways of a long-term peaceful solution. According to him, the intent of the proposed negotiations with Ukraine is to destruct the first causes of the conflict and safeguard Russia's interests.

Later Zelenski said he would be waiting for the Russian president in Turkey on Thursday.
