The gathering of Pope Francis with the patriarch Cyril demonstrated that there are "spiritual forces" in the West, which search to normalize relations with Russia, believes the leader of this country Vladimir Putin. The gathering took place in February 2016 at Havana Airport.
According to Putin, the spiritual culture of Western countries, which is based on Christian values, needs rebirth.
Recalling Pope Francis, who died on the second day of Easter, Putin stated that he had a “good attitude to Russia”, which was influenced by his Latin American background and the attitude of the “strong majority” of the citizens of the countries of the continent. According to him, the Pope "had strong views and convictions", but was under "very strong pressure".
