Leaders from Poland, Germany, France, Italy, Romania, large Britain and Canada, as well as NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and president of the European Council Charles Michel took part in the teleconference organised at the initiative of the United States President.
After the meeting, president Andrzej Duda made a message to the media, in which he informed about the course of the talks. – Of course, a subject specified as it has been the last time, due to the fact that we talk about it all the time: the problem of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the increasing Russian presence at the borders of Ukraine and Belarus. We discussed one more time possible, anticipated scenarios of events," he said.
– In general, I can sum up this way: there is an absolute unity of Western leaders, there is simply a sense of deep request for solidarity, declaring this solidarity both to our common and to our solidarity with Ukraine, the request to aid Ukraine, although there is no declaration to send any military, military, to Ukraine, but is willing to support Ukraine. Ukraine both financially and through the supply of weapons and another means that Ukraine will need, and especially we are talking about defensive measures, I want to emphasise very powerfully – the president said.
Kiev officially asked Moscow to explain the Russian military activities at the border with Ukraine – the chief of the Ukrainian MFA Dmytro Kułęba said that Russia has a 48-hour response.
Andrzej Duda expressed the view that the actions carried out by Russia and its president Vladimir Putin “have led to the unity of the West, which we have not seen for a long time” and to “the detonation of patriotic attitudes in Ukraine”.
The president pointed out that Russia needs to be talked to, but it is not allowed to make concessions that “will reduce sovereignty, weaken the North Atlantic Alliance, which will de facto mean the implementation of these crazy Russian demands – absolutely impossible to accept.”
After “constructive and sincere” talks with the head of the Russian MON, the British Minister of National Defence said he heard the assurance that Russia had no intention of invading Ukraine.
Andrzej Duda said that he accepted the voices that fell at the video conference with satisfaction. “We besides believe that, in our experience, over the centuries of relations with Russia, we must absolutely not give way to Russia. If he gives way to Russia, Russia takes concessions as a weakness and is all the more aggressive," he stressed.
– It is with large satisfaction that NATO behaves responsibly. That's why we joined the Alliance to have this sense of security. This feeling is, NATO does not go back, on the contrary, NATO is strengthening in Central Europe – he continued.
The president besides mentioned 2 levels – military and diplomatic. "On the 1 hand, we must build our defensive safety so that we are not attacked, so that we can see that we are ready to defy the attack if this attack happens. The second is diplomacy, and it's different formats of conversation with Russia. dialog is needed and it needs to be led to the last minute, we were all in agreement about it," he said.
