According to the 1997 Polish Constitution, the president is the head of the Armed Forces. During peace, this is exercised by the Minister of National Defence. During the war, at the request of the Prime Minister, he appoints the Chief Commander of the Armed Forces. He besides appoints Chief of General Staff and commanders of individual types of Armed Forces, and, at the request of the Minister of National Defence, gives officers military degrees.
