– This morning our briefing took place with the Border Guard, Polish Army and Police. The subject was the situation at the border with Germany and the examination of the request for temporary reintroduction of border control. We decided that we were restoring temporary control at the Polish-German border and Poland with Lithuania – said Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Tuesday.
Berlin responds to the decision of the Polish government
The authorities in Berlin have already referred to Poland's decision. "The introduction of border controls may be politically essential in the short term, but yet leads to a dead end. This is due to the fact that controls do not solve migration problems, but only emphasize their symptoms" - said Abraham, the coordinator of the German-Polish cooperation government for WP Knut Abraham, in a statement.
As he stressed, "the only way out of this deadlock in the short word is to have a pragmatic border government on both sides of the border".
Let us add that just before Tusk announced this decision, Chancellor Friedrich Merz told journalists in Berlin that his government kept very close contact with the Polish authorities so that the effects of German border controls with Poland were "as severe as possible".
– We know that the Polish government is besides planning to introduce border controls with Lithuania to limit illegal border crossings from Lithuania to Poland," said Merz during the press conference. “So we have a common problem that we want to solve together,” he added.
Poland restores border controls with Germany
Donald Tusk reported that temporary border checks would enter into force from Monday 7 July. – Until then, the applicable services, including primarily the Border Guard, were obliged to logistically prepare this operation," he said.
– As you know, restoring control is besides a very serious organisational and logistical activity, regrouping an adequate number of officers. We have informed the counterparts of this decision in the countries afraid – the Prime Minister continued.
Tusk besides added that the subject of the border was discussed respective times during talks with the German Chancellor. – I told him that Poland's patience in this substance is moving out.
