Poles unrivalled in mountain struggles in Italy

Podchorzyżów from the Academy of Land Forces took first place in the Italian Raid Commando 2025 competition in Lombardy. On their way to victory, they defeated respective twelve teams representing European military universities. Participants competed in demanding alpine terrain, performing shooting, bombardment, reconnaissance or climbing tasks, among others.

This year's competition was the 37th edition Italian Raid Commando. This time 40 teams appeared at the start – from Poland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands – grouped by categories: professional soldiers, cadets and reservists. Poland was represented by a four-man squad from the advanced Schools Section Academy of Land Army from Wrocław.

The players had to pass in a full gutter a distance of 40 km in a mountainous and wooded area. "On the way, they performed a number of tasks simulating the real conditions of the battlefield. Thus, there was, among others, a shooting phase (using short and long weapons), a night march on the orientation of the tactical loop. Climbing and another mountaineering tasks were besides waiting for participants. Competition required both physical preparation and tactical, as well as squad capacity and intellectual resilience – explains Captain Piotr Dąbrowski, lecturer at the AWL Mountain Action Department, guardian of the advanced Góra Training Section.

Teams had to prove their skills with mortar service. They were besides waiting for bomb tasks, specified as preparing the cargo for the demolition of the bridge, or defeating the minefield. They besides tested in reflection and designation of enemy weapons or infiltration of enemy terrain.

– Moving along the route, we had to scope further points. On the first one, we had to prepare explosives to destruct the bridge, then we had to run for orientation, and after reaching the mark we had to show cognition of military equipment and admit it by shape. The next point was to cross the minefield. Another challenge was to penetrate the enemy’s territory to avoid reflection posts. That's where we were expected to do the call-and-drive procedure. The next tasks the participants faced include an attack on the object occupied by the opponent, assistance to the wounded on the battlefield, and mortar service. And with this last task, due to the deficiency of experience in handling this weapon, Poles had the biggest problem. In general, however, they came out of the competition with a defensive hand, even though they were unsure of triumph to the very end.

– Throughout the competition, we tried to keep the best pace. On any episodes we just ran. We were ahead of the next teams.We didn't truly feel confident. In fact, until the last minute we were waiting for the results to be announced. erstwhile our squad was read first, we had to hide the joy in order to seriously appear after receiving the cup and make the best of it. After all, we did not represent only ourselves in Italy, but besides the advanced Góra Training Section, the Academy of the Land Forces, and the full Poland – he emphasized.

In the classification of subjects from military schools Poles took first place, ahead of 2 teams from Germany. This is the 3rd laurel won by AWL cadets in the past of Italian competitions. In the first place in the category of military schools they besides ranked during the competition in 2017 and 2018.

This year's Italian Raid Commando ended in the city of Monza with a solemn parade of all participants, during which hymns of the countries participating in the event were played.
