Few Poles realize that their yearly burden on income taxation has increased dramatically in just 2 years. The latest study by renowned company PITax.pl reveals shocking data: average sum of PIT increased from PLN 3.5 1000 to PLN 5 thousand. That's an increase of nearly 43%! At the same time, the number of completely exempt people has shrunk from 43% to just 33% of taxpayers. What does that mean for your wallet? You're most likely paying much more than you think, and worse – you're losing your chance to get that money back due to the fact that you're not taking advantage of the benefits available. You only have until April 30, 2025 to settle your PIT for last year and get back what you deserve.
Why are you paying more? Hidden inflation trap
The increase in wages, frequently seen as good news, does not truly translate into more money in the pockets of Poles. On the contrary, inflation, which drives nominal wage increases, pushes more people beyond the tax-free threshold and even higher taxation thresholds. Although since 2022 the tax-free amount amounts to a solid PLN 30 thousand, increasing earnings make an expanding group of Poles exceed this limit, losing the privilege of a zero PIT.
This is not the only origin of the expanding burden. More and more Poles diversify their sources of income by undertaking additional contract orders, establishing single-person business activity or renting apartments. These additional revenues frequently do not benefit from the same taxation preferences as basic employment, resulting in a higher cumulative burden. Effect? The percent of people receiving a taxation refund fell by 4 percent points, while the number of those who gotta pay for the taxation increase.
Millions lose their return. See if you're in this group.
If your earnings have increased in fresh years, you are almost surely paying a higher taxation now. You may have switched from a group of people completely exempt from PIT to those paying 12% tax. Worse still, if your yearly income exceeded PLN 120 thousand, you may have missed the second taxation threshold, where the rate is as advanced as 32%. It's a painful surprise that could cost you thousands of gold!
A perfect example is matrimony from Poznań. Mr. Marcin, computer scientist, earns PLN 8,000 a month, and Mrs. Anna runs a tiny bookstore. Even 2 years ago, erstwhile their full yearly income oscillated around PLN 80 thousand, they paid a symbolic tax. Today, with revenues exceeding PLN 130 1000 per year, their taxation burden increased to over PLN 6 thousand. Only consultation with the taxation advisor made them aware that they could deduct expenses for the net (up to PLN 760 per year), books essential for Anna's work or ZUS contributions. Thanks to this They managed to save PLN 2 000Which would otherwise be lost in the cash register.
Simple: The most ignored reliefs that save your wallet
Most Poles do not take full advantage of the taxation incentives available. According to Krzysztof Biernacki of PITax.pl: “Many taxpayers simply don’t know what they can use. There are inactive besides fewer people counting down donations, spending on the Internet, rehabilitation or utilizing household allowances to the full extent." The PITax.pl study reveals dramatic regional differences: while in the Świętokrzyskie voivodship many taxpayers benefit from the relief, in the Zachodniopomorskie and Kujawsko-Pomorskie regions only all third! The main causes are deficiency of knowledge, fear of mistakes and deficiency of time. meantime Even a fewer hours dedicated to settlement can bring thousands of gold savings.
Here are the 3 most popular reliefs that can save your wallet:
- Internet Relief: You can deduct up to PLN 760 per year for net access. The relief is granted for 2 consecutive years and covers both fixed and mobile internet.
- Rehabilitation relief: 1 of the most valuable, accessible to disabled people and their carers. Allows to deduct expenses on medicines (over 100 PLN per month), medical equipment, rehabilitation tours or adaptation of the apartment.
- Profamily relief: As many as PLN 112.04 per year for each child. But remember the income limits. For children with disabilities, relief is granted regardless of age and without income limits.
Your plan to defend against the tax. proceed until April 30th!
Do not let inflation and ignorance deprive you of hard-earned money. Here's what you can do to lower your PIT and recover the return:
- Check all your revenue: Make certain you take into account contract orders, selling items online, renting apartments. Each income above PLN 30 1000 a year is taxable.
- Take advantage of taxation breaks: You only have time to April 30, 2025to deduct expenses from 2024. After that, you'll lose your chance to get your money back.
- Consider a joint settlement with your spouse: If 1 of you earns much more, a common settlement can lower the tax, allowing you to benefit from a lower taxation threshold.
- Plan spending for 2025: If you know that you will request rehabilitation equipment, expenses on the Internet, or plans to donate, plan them so that you can number them off in the future settlement.
Don't be surprised! Traps you gotta remember in 2025
The increase in average PIT is likely to hold. Inflation continues to push wages up, and taxation thresholds are not automatically valued. This means that more and more Poles will pay higher taxes, even if their real purchasing power does not increase. Especially careful should be those who first crossed the threshold in 2024 PLN 120 1000 yearly income. This means moving to the second taxation threshold with 32% of the rate, which may be a painful surprise on account.
Remember besides that the income limit of the dependable disabled individual for the rehabilitation relief in 2024 was PLN 21 371,52. As the pitax.pl portal informs, exceeding this limit excludes the anticipation of a relief. The only defence against rising burdens remains the conscious and active usage of available reliefs and deductions. Experts advise you to carefully analyse your expenses each year in terms of deductibility – even tiny amounts can add up to the considerable savings that will stay in your wallet.
