Under the medical campus in Lublin there are about 1.5 km of underground corridors. Today, they have a method function. In the future, they are to become a crisis communication system, a place of refuge for hundreds of people, and yet even a facility for an underground infirmary capable of conducting emergency procedures.

The task involves rebuilding underground communication tunnels, hidden under the buildings of University Clinical infirmary No. 4, University Children's infirmary and Medical Simulation Centre. The Medical University of Lublin authorities want to transform them into a strategy of collective protection and communication during the crisis. According to the assumptions, the investment will cover about 1115 m2 of space and almost 2730 m3 of quagments. The object is to correspond to the U-2 protective category. The estimated cost of modernization of tunnels is about PLN 40 million.

Underground to live in a time of crisis

– We're in the plan stage. We have a functional-use plan and a recognized area. We know what needs are – says Kamila Ćwik, p.o. Chief Executive of USK No. 4 and manager of the University Children's Hospital. – Tunnels now function, but are alternatively technical. We would like to adapt them to almost medical conditions, allowing the free movement of doctors and patients – he explains.

The first phase is to focus on creating an efficient communication strategy between infirmary units on campus. For this purpose, repairs, fresh ventilation, installation security, simplification of dust and adaptation of space to medical transport requirements will be necessary. Today, the sick cannot be safely transported. In the future, in the event of anxieties and crisis, erstwhile the movement on the surface will be hard or dangerous, tunnels are intended to let the free movement of personnel, patients and equipment – without having to go outside. We're not just talking about war. There are different crises. – manager of Ćwik as an example points to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The second phase involves utilizing the underground as a protective space and developing an additional bed base there for the time of danger. Underground infrastructure is expected to supply the ability to hide people for 48 hours. 3 zones have about 400 seats and 200 lying. The strategy is intended to accommodate about 600 people.

The most ambitious script involves preparing an underground infrastructure capable not only of evacuating and sheltering patients, but besides of performing medical activities and creating a partially functional infirmary underground. “A more future dream is to make at least tiny treatment rooms to which you can decision and operate there as a full hospital,” says Kamila Ćwik.

Hospital underground

As part of joint exercises for the underworld of university units, soldiers of the 2nd Lublin Territorial Defence Brigade came down with infirmary staff. The aim was to check the anticipation of utilizing existing infrastructure in crisis situations and to identify areas for modernisation.

- We live in different times. Objects specified as a infirmary can undoubtedly be the focus of alien strength. Therefore, the conduct and provision of wellness benefits under unconventional conditions, for example in these corridors, provides, among another things, good protection for medical personnel, but besides enables the provision of benefits to patients," stressed Prof. dr hab. n. med. Kamil Torres, Rector of Education and Education of UMLUB.

Exercises conducted together with soldiers are practical. During 1 simulation, the military were to grow the bed base almost without the participation of infirmary personnel. We're working with WOT permanently. The diagnosis and teaching of topography of the infirmary is highly important, due to the fact that there may be quite a few people in request in times of anxiety. The topography of the infirmary is not easy, there are quite a few nooks, so it is crucial that soldiers know how to function – summarizes the manager of Ćwik.
