Friday's vote in the Sejm on the law decriminating abortion aid brought quite a few emotion and clearly outlined political divisions. Ultimately, the bill was not adopted – 218 Members voted against it, and 215 supported it. Additionally, 2 Members abstained and 23 did not vote. The Sejm was against the law decriminating abortion.

Of the 29 PSL-TD Members voting, 24 were against the bill. Among them were prominent politicians specified as Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Deputy Marshal Piotr Zgorzelski. 4 PSL-TD MPs supported the bill: Agnieszka Tupek, Jolanta Zięba-Gzik, Urszula Pasławska and Magdalena Magoka. Only Adam the Heir abstained. Undoubtedly, the PSL-TD position had a crucial impact on the result of the vote.

Voting in another clubs – against the law decriminating abortion

The Citizen Coalition, Poland 2050 and the Left overwhelmingly supported the bill. 154 Members of the KO, 30 Members of Poland 2050 and 26 Members of the Left voted for it. It is worth noting that no of these clubs voted against the bill.

However, 3 KO Members, including Roman Gierty, did not vote. Giertych explained his decision, emphasizing respect for KO voters' views and club discipline.

PiS, Confederate and Kukiz’15 – strong resistance

Out of 176 PiS Members voting, only Monika Pawłowska abstained. The remainder were definitely against the bill. The Confederacy and Kukiz’15 besides unanimously opposed decriminalisation of abortion aid.

Among the non-attached MPs, the only 1 who supported the bill was Adam Gomola.

The future of the bill and the political consequences

The bill provided for decriminalization of abortion aid and abortion with the consent of the pregnant female until Week 12. Although the bill has not passed, the debate on this issue will surely continue, and Friday's vote may have long-term consequences for the political scenery of Poland.

This consequence shows how profoundly divided Polish political parties are in terms of reproductive rights, which can affect future elections and political alliances.
