Through his gathering with Donald Trump in Alaska Putin tries to accomplish at the negotiating table what he failed militarily, warns the German press.

US president Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin will meet on August 15 in Alaska to discuss the end of the war in Ukraine. It is known from the leaks that they are to discuss Ukraine's territorial concessions to Russia. Monday (11.08.2025) the press in Germany measure this very critically.

German press about Alaska meeting

Commentator on the diary "Sueddeutsche Zeitung" writes: "Nothing good should be expected from the announced gathering of US president Donald Trump with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The specified fact that the president (Ukraine) Volodymyr Zelenski will not be an equal partner in negotiations is negative. Putin confirmed his war goals on 1 August: he wants not only to safe his conquests in Ukraine, but besides to effectively subdue Kiev by giving up Ukraine's membership of NATO and the presence of Western allies in the territory of this country, disarming the army to its residual size, and renewing Russian influence besides in politics. gathering in Alaska will not bring a ceasefire, much little peace".

"Don't fall for it."

The "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" paper states: "In substantive terms, what is supposedly the core of Putin's proposal is an apparent effort to negociate what Russia has not achieved militarily. Apparently, he wants a ceasefire in exchange for giving up the Donbass lands for which a fierce fight is being fought. ... should not be fooled, especially in Washington.... It is no wonder that Ukraine does not want to agree to this. Europeans rightly took Zelenski's side and recalled crucial principles: Ukraine must be active in a process (peaceful), a ceasefire would only let meaningful talks, and the starting point must be the course of the front line".

"High Risk"

Regional newspapers besides comment on the planned gathering in Alaska. The diary "Die Rheinpfalz" reads: "For Ukraine and its allies in Europe, this gathering means first and foremost 1 thing: a large risk. Unlike Zelensky, many Ukrainians after 3 and a half years of devastating war are ready, though unwilling, to surrender Russia's territories. However, their destiny cannot be decided without them. At the same time Putin cannot get the impression that after the Ukrainian model he can conquer further territories – for example in the Baltic countries".

Commentator on "Nuernberger Zeitung" reminds us that Ukraine was not and is not an aggressor. "If, however, he is not allowed to participate in talks in Alaska, or at best he will only be in crouaras, it will clearly show that the planet will gotta get utilized to the order in which the law of the stronger 1 applies. The consequences are unpredictable. The hopes of peace that are not imposed in Europe will be buried. This is simply a demonstration that the remainder of the planet must mostly helplessly watch a tiny group of powerful players have it. After all, military power counts."

The paper "Frankfurer Rundschau" states: "No 1 should put besides much hope in the gathering of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. Although the president of the United States has late brokered a dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan and between Rwanda and the Congo, these conflicts are not comparable to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russian autocrat Putin did everything to conquer the neighboring country and before the summit with Trump repeatedly repeated his maximum demands, which are equivalent to Kiev's surrender. On the another hand, the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski and his European allies rightly made known demands – for example, that the destiny of Ukraine cannot be decided without Kiev's participation. But they haven't made it through yet. Another prisoner exchange is possible in Alaska, but there are no signs of peace. Even a ceasefire seems impossible. The demands of both sides of the conflict are besides divergent".
