Most French support the hiring of prisons abroad

More than half of French citizens are in favour of renting places in prisons abroad to send prisoners there to relieve the burden of the national prison strategy — according to a survey conducted by a radio station CSA for Europe 1, tv channel CNews and diary du Dimanche.

Earlier, French president Emmanuel Macron supported the thought of renting places in prisons in another countries if needed. Earlier, Figaro paper besides reported that France is considering transferring any abroad prisoners from overcrowded prisons to prisons in east European countries.

"According to the poll... 52% of respondents are in favour of renting prison space abroad to fight overcrowding in the country," Europe reports 1.

The highest support (71 percent) for this thought was recorded among young people aged 18-24, and the lowest (45 percent) among French people aged 25-34, reported the radio station.

The survey was conducted online on 15-16 May among 1,010 adult citizens of France. No data on the mistake margin was provided.

The prison overflow in France from 1 period to the next is another record. The average prison placement rate on 1 April was 133%. At the same time in many prison institutions, this rate exceeded 200%. The French authorities had previously reported that around 15,000 additional prisons were to be created by 2027, but the implementation of this plan was postponed.

France ranks 3rd on the list of countries with the worst situation in the prison system, after Cyprus and Romania. The European Court of Human Rights has repeatedly condemned the republic for bad conditions in detention centres, in peculiar for overcrowding. In July 2023, the Court ruled that the articles of the European Convention on Human Rights were infringed due to overcrowding of prisons and the deficiency of targeted measures to improve the situation.
