

“My government will end the first day of silence between Berlin and Warsaw. We will treat our neighbour in the East with respect, and due to our full returns history, with empathy. Moreover, we ask Poland to take over leadership in Europe and for Europe within the Presidency of the European Union," said Merz on Thursday in a programme speech on abroad policy. Merz is president of the largest CDU opposition organization and candidate for the CDU/CSU block of the Chadetic organization as Chancellor of Germany in the Bundestag election on 23 February. Merz expressed satisfaction with the beginning of the fresh seat of the Polish embassy in the centre of Berlin, close the Brandenburg Gate. "Our bilateral relations should be right here in the political heart of our capital," he stressed.
Merz on a fresh treaty of good neighbourhood
The head of the CDU recalled that on 17 June 1991 Poland and Germany signed the Treaty on good neighbourhood and friendly cooperation, which is inactive the basis of a bilateral relationship. “I propose that, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of this document, we sign a treaty on relationship that will rise our bilateral relations to a fresh level,” said Merz.
The issue of the fresh Polish-German treaty has been discussed for respective years among experts on the Polish side. A model was to be signed in 2019 in Aachen by the German-French Treaty of 56 years after the 1963 Elysian Treaty.
In fresh months, Merz has repeatedly advocated the improvement of relations with Poland. During his visit to Warsaw last December, he sought support for the thought of establishing a contact group supporting Ukraine, in which Poland would besides participate.
