In fresh years, the situation in Ukraine has become 1 of the main topics of global discussion. Many countries, including the United States and Russia, expressed their views on the conflict in the east of Ukraine. On Wednesday, Russia's abroad Minister, Sergei Lavrow, stated that US president Donald Trump publically stated that 1 of the reasons for the current situation in Ukraine was the policy of the erstwhile U.S. administration, which, according to Lavrow, sought to include Ukraine in NATO.
Lavrow, appearing in the Russian State Duma (lower home of Parliament), said that “no Western leader said it, but he (Trump) said it respective times.” His words referred to Trump's statement, which accused his predecessor Joe Biden of changing his position on Ukraine's membership of NATO. Lavrow stated that "this is simply a signal that he understands (Trump) Russia's position".
The situation in Ukraine is complicated and multi-threaded. The conflict in the east of Ukraine has continued since 2014 and has already consumed over 13,000 fatalities. According to UN data, over 3.5 million people request humanitarian assistance in the region. Ukraine has already lost control of part of its territory, including Crimea, which has been annexed by Russia.
The United States and the European Union imposed economical sanctions on Russia in connection with the annexation of Crimea and the support of the rebels in the east of Ukraine. Russia maintains that its actions are legal and that it supports the people's right to self-determination. Ukraine and the West claim that Russia has broken global laws and has an aggressive policy towards its neighbours.
In July 2022, US president Joe Biden and Russian president Vladimir Putin met in Geneva to discuss the situation in Ukraine and another global issues. This gathering was the first direct conversation between the 2 leaders since Biden took office. Biden urged Putin to halt support for the rebels in Ukraine and to refrain from further aggression.
In response, Putin stated that Russia would not give way to national safety and that its actions in Ukraine were justified. Relations between Russia and the West are increasingly tense, and the situation in Ukraine remains uncertain.
According to BBC data, from the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine to July 2022, over 3.5 million people left their homes in search of security. More than 1.5 million of them live in the territory of Ukraine, and more than 2 million went to another countries, mainly Russia, Poland and Germany.
In contrast, the European Union and the United States announced support for Ukraine and increased sanctions against Russia. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenski stated that his country needs more than EUR 10 billion of global aid to rebuild the economy and infrastructure.
In this context, Lavrow's comment on Trump's statements can be seen as a signal that Russia is ready to discuss the situation in Ukraine with the West. However, relations between Russia and the West stay complicated and require further discussions and negotiations to find a lasting solution to the conflict in Ukraine.
