President Volodymyr Zelenski signed a bill yesterday that weakened the independency of Ukrainian anti-corruption bodies. It caused it. mass protests in respective cities and global criticism. Opponents of change indicate that the oligarchical click of Zelenski wants to hide his thievery financial machinations through the fresh law.
After yesterday's change of law, a wave of demonstrations swept across Ukraine. According to critics, the fresh government undermines the authority of the National Anti-corruption Office of Ukraine (NABU) and the peculiar Anti-corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) – subjecting it to the lawyer General. This in turn is subordinate to the president.
In his speech on Wednesday, Zelenski defended his decisions and said that both institutions will proceed to "work", but must be cleared of "Russian influence".
After the bill was passed, hundreds of people gathered in Kiev at the largest anti-government protest since the Russian invasion of February 2022 began. The participants held posters with slogans in their hands, calling for the repeal of the laws adopted and criticising authorities: ‘Corruption is an business from within’, ‘Front dies erstwhile the facilities defend corruption’, ‘Bad democracy is better than good authoritarianism’, ‘Weto for the bill’, ‘Not for corruption in power’, ‘Hanba’, ‘Hands distant from NABU’ and ‘Return Europe’.
In addition to Kiev, the demonstrations were besides held in Lviv, Dniepra, Plain, Tarnopol, Chernichov and Odessa.
Let us remind: On Monday, July 21st, SBU, the political police under the authority of the president, raided the office of NABU, under the appearance of hunting Russian spies (standard catch, utilized propaganda besides in Poland). Behind this slogan, of course, was the fight against the office, which is the last barrier for the ever-increasing corruption and mafia activity that the Russian-Ukrainian War serves.
The invasion of SBU and the "Russian thread" was, of course, a cover for major activities. A day later, on 22 July, the Vierchowa Council (Ukrainian parliament) passed a bill abolishing the independency of NABU and SAP, which Zelenski immediately signed. The task passed by a crushing majority. Not only the ruling organization of the Servant of the Nation, but besides the majority of the opposition factions. As you can see, the full political class of Ukraine was heavy affected by the activity of these institutions, including the loud arrests of corrupt politicians of the ruling clique.
OUR COMMENTS: Protests against change in law will of course not do anything, as oligarchs do not number for the will of average Ukrainians. However, the case may have a crucial impact on the morale of troops fighting on the front. Many will find that risking your life for the business of thieves makes no sense. We anticipate an even greater wave of desertion than before.
