Lithuania's president Gitanas Nausėda believes Moscow is determined to avoid dialog with Ukraine.
"I think Putin will do anything to prevent any dialogue. I'm certain he's not curious in the room. I do not believe in Russia's goodwill and I never believed," Nausėda said. According to the President, only the US can bring Russia to the negotiating table with Ukraine. However, he adds that the rules of the game must be clear – if the West finds that Russia is undermining the peace effort, then all sanctions should be directed at it.
“It is alternatively clear to all of us who is guilty, why these conversations do not begin. We can see clearly that Russia has so far faked [talking] and tried to buy time," Nausėda stressed.
Speaking about Ukraine's accession to NATO Nausėda stressed that although Russia opposes membership, it would nevertheless be a blow to the Alliance's reputation if Ukraine were not invited to join.
