I am convinced that there is no defence without space technology today, and that space has become a critical domain of defence actions on an equal level with land, sea, air and cyberspace," said Dr. Sławomir Uznański-Wiśniewski at the Aviation Military Academy. The second Pole in Space and the first on the global Space Station met with students of the Orląt School.
– Space technologies are active present not only in civilian life but besides in military life. It is from space that our systems of positioning, navigation, satellite imaging or weather data come from, among others, – he said Dr Sławomi Uznański-Wiśniewski In Military Academy of Aviation in Dęblin.
On December 17, Orląt School hosted the astronaut of the European Space Agency (ESA), an engineer and scientist, 1 of the most recognizable figures in the Polish space sector. Dr. Uznański-Wiśniewski is the first Pole in past to participate in the mission at the ISS global Space Station in the summertime of 2025.
The Way Into Space
LAW has been training military pilots, navigators and specialists liable for the operation and improvement of our air force for decades. However, the university's modern mission goes beyond classical aviation. The Academy operates the SpaceLAW technological and Astronautic Circle, and the university is increasingly developing cooperation with the space sector. He besides deals with discipline on satellite technology applications, which are increasingly crucial for modern defence.
During his visit to Dęblin, Dr. Uznański-Wiśniewski convinced students that present not only scientists or medics have a chance to go into space, but besides military pilots. As he stressed, the prospects in this area are real, and Poland's membership of NATO has opened up fresh professional opportunities for pilots.
He pointed to Shubhanshu Shukla, the captain of the Indian Air Force, who together with him took part in the Axis 4 mission, or Italian pilot and astronaut Captain Andrea Patassa. “A military pilot career will always be taken into account in the recruitment process,” said the astronaut. As he explained, there are presently 3 major paths leading to space: pilot, scientific-engineering and medical-biological.
For LAW listeners, Dr. Uznański-Wiśniewski's professional road became an example of modern service to the state through discipline and technology. “After Mr. Sławomi’s speech, we had hoped that we were 1 of the 3 sectors needed in space, that each of us could become an astronaut in the future and represent Poland on the planet stage,” said Kamil, a student of the Academy.
Homeland security
“Poland is facing a immense chance for us to build future technological solutions for space and aviation missions in Europe. However, it takes courageous decisions at both method and operational level and political level," said the astronaut. As he added, he hopes that the Polish flight and mission of Ignis signaled that not only we belong to the group of the most developed countries, but we will be among them for good and establish our position in it.
During the gathering the LAW guest besides told about Polish experiments carried out in orbit in the field of engineering, space medicine and fresh materials. He explained that 1 of them, medical-physiological, was to collect detailed data from his body. These included information on muscle function, muscle strength, soft tissue quality and blood counts.
Based on them, the company that commissioned investigation prepares personalized physical training for astronauts for circumstantial missions. "I think it may be incredibly interesting for the air force, naval forces and troops in general," said the scientist.
At the end of the meeting, the astronaut received from the university's “SpaceLAW” wheel printed on a 3D printer a miniature rocket that he flew into space. He besides signed a commemorative signature in the guest book and on the university telescope and gave the Orląt School the certificate of the Polish mission of Ignis, which was coordinated by the Polish Space Agency POLSA.
– I besides pass the Polish flag, which was with me in space, around the Earth 320 times and over 13 million km – Dr. Uznański-Wiśniewski spoke with pride. A visit to Dęblin was 1 of the national points Technology and discipline Routes of the Ignis mission with the participation of a Polish astronaut.
