From 2021 to 1923, Antarctica’s ice cover not only stopped melting, but even increased its mass. This is the first specified case in decades that has even slowed down global growth in sea levels. What does this mean for the future of climate?
Unexpected increase in ice – what does the data say?
Recent investigation published in "Science China Earth Sciences" have revealed that Antarctica has recorded a evidence increase in ice mass over the last 3 years. Satellite data from the mission GRACE AND GRACE-FOwhich measurement Earth's gravity changes, confirm this unexpected change.
Before, in years 2011-2020, glacier lost on average 142 gigates of ice per year. However, in years 2021-2023 trend turned – ice cover gained about 108 gigaton per year. That was adequate to make temporarily reduce global sea level growth by 0.3 mm per year.
Where's the ice coming the fastest?
The highest increase was observed in Eastern Antarctica, especially in regions:
- Wilkes Land
- Queen Mary's Land
- Ice pools Totten, Denman, Moscow University and Gulf of Vincennes
These are areas that have previously lost ice at an alarming rate. Now they seem to partially rebuild, mostly thanks more severe snowfall.
Does this mean the end of global warming?
Scientists point out that This trend may be temporary. Antarctica remains 1 of the main drivers of rising sea levels, alongside the melting of Greenland and the thermal expansion of oceans.
At the same time planet leaders, like UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, call for More investment in the fight against climate change. During the summit COP29 The global Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) presented a study "World Energy Transitions Outlook 2024"in which he postulates global climate tax.
What about the Antarctic glaciers?
Although fresh data gives a minute of breath, scientists inactive believe long-term melting trend can persist. Is the current increase in ice just a temporary anomaly or the beginning of a fresh trend? Time will tell.
