The dynamic improvement of artificial intelligence-based systems and tools gives large opportunities, but besides gives emergence to concerns about the usage of citizens' data and information entrusted to public institutions. MON uses AI in various areas, but as Deputy Minister Paweł Bejda assures, not at the expense of the privacy of Poles and Poles.
Agnieszka Buczyńska (Poland2050-TD) sent an interview to the Ministry of Defence in which she raised the question of artificial intelligence (AI) as a key component of digital transformation. The parliamentarian raised a number of questions on, among others, AI-based systems (which are presently being utilized by the Ministry of Defence or its institutions), the safety of their usage and the methods of implementing these tools.
In response, Deputy Minister of Defence Paweł Bejda confirmed that projects utilizing artificial intelligence in various systems are being implemented in the MON as “supporting, automating and enhancing the efficiency of current, administrative and operational processes”. However, he warned that in any of these systems, citizens' data were not processed.
As 1 example use of AI in the Ministry of Defence Deputy Minister replaced unmanned aircraft (BSP). Thanks to artificial intelligence, reconnaissance drones can interpret data from cameras and sensors, and thus identify objects, admit faces, map environment, etc. another benefits of this technology for BSP include device learning (the drone can optimize the flight path, more accurately detect objects) or processing large amounts of data during flight.
MON besides uses AI to make real-time translations and transcriptions, identify “suspected” pieces of origin code in the software being developed or in cybersecurity of information systems for monitoring, analysis and detection of cyber threats.
Currently, the largest AI task implemented, we read in the answer of the Deputy Minister of Bejda, is the appointment Artificial Intelligence Implementation Center, which will be the competence center for the usage of artificial intelligence in the MON. This structure is created within the Cyberspace defence office (DKWOC) and its launch is intended to aid accelerate the pace and increase the scope and scale of implementation of AI solutions in the resort.
– Artificial intelligence will play a key function in the way military operations are conducted in the future. The fresh institution will let fast integration of AI into different domains, specified as autonomous combat systems, cybersecurity, intelligence analysts or logistics," he said a fewer months ago Maj-Gen Karol Molenda, Commander of KWOC.
The Deputy manager of the Ministry assured that the staff of the Ministry were active in trainings – individual and group – expanding their cognition of the possibilities offered by the AI and assessing the risks associated with its use. As an example, the Deputy Minister gave a course organised by the Ministry of Digital Affairs "Effective usage of AI in government administration".
In addition, the Polish Armed Forces have established contact with the Allied Command Transformation (ACT). This cooperation is about learning solutions to improve the analysis and search of papers in the database.
