What decision did Matthew Morawiecki make?
Mateusz Morawiecki resigned on Thursday of parliamentary immunity. "I trust that fact and justice will prevail, and in Poland the fact will be restored," wrote the erstwhile Prime Minister on the X portal. "Before justice I intend to exposure the actions of the people and parties forming a government coalition today, seeking at all costs to block elections within a constitutional deadline — only so that the elections can be held by Rafał Trzaskowski," he added.
What is the suspected erstwhile Prime Minister about?
The Sejm's approval to bring Morawiecki to justice (removed immunity) was requested by the prosecutor, who accused him that in 2020 as Prime Minister he had exceeded his powers and took action to prepare and hold the presidential elections on 10 May this year on a purely correspondence basis.
The prosecutor's motion went to the Parliament on 16 January. Morawiecki then said that he would gladly waive immunity, and that he acted in accordance with the Constitution on correspondence elections.
How did Adam Bodnar react?
The Minister of Justice stated that "there is no better way to answer the prosecution's allegations than to mention to them with an open helmet." He added that he hoped there would be no problem with the erstwhile Prime Minister appearing within the set time limit, giving explanations and answering questions.
"Except when, in this peculiar case, a gross violation of the law was confirmed on 28 June 2024 by a final decision of the Chief Administrative Court," said Adam Bodnar.
