The Suwałki territory Court ruled in a loud case of violent beating of a 20-year-old by his 17-year-old friend from Ukraine. The young man has been sentenced to 8 years imprisonment, but the conviction is not yet final. The injured remains unconscious, and his condition requires constant medical attention.
What happened in Suwałki?
The event occurred in early October 2023 in an uninhabited area at Różana Street in Suwałki. A 17-year-old Ukrainian attacked his 20-year-old colleague, causing him severe head injury. The effects of the beating proved tragic – the victim suffered permanent wellness harm and needs 24-hour care.
The court besides ordered the suspect to pay PLN 100 1000 to compensate the victim's family.
Why did the court change the qualification of the act?
At first, the prosecution accused a 17-year-old attempted murder, however, the Suwałki territory Court considered that it did not act with the intent of direct deprivation of life. justice Beata Okrał stressed that although the strength and location of the punches were very dangerous, it could not be clearly stated that the mark of the attacker was to kill the victim. As a result, the legal qualification was changed to Violent beating.
Were there extenuating circumstances?
The court considered that the suspect acted under strong emotions After the fight over the girl. Nevertheless, the justice felt that the level of aggression was advanced adequate to require severe punishment. The 17-year-old didn't plead guilty, claiming there was nothing but a fight.
The prosecution's reaction
Prosecutor Aneta Górnicka-Piskorska announced making an appeal, considering the conviction besides mild. In her opinion, the change in the qualification of the act should not lead to specified a crucial simplification in the penalty, given the severity of the injury suffered.

The judgement is not yet final, and the case may go to the Court of Appeal. The victim’s household hopes to exacerbate the punishment, emphasizing that the effects of beating forever changed the life of their son.
