Polish border services one more time detained a food batch from Ukraine. This time it is about over a tonne of marmalade that has not met safety and quality requirements. What precisely caused the inspectors to doubt? Why are Ukrainian food products becoming blacklisted? Let us find out what happened behind this decision and what this means to the Polish consumer.

Marmalada from Ukraine with ban on entry into Poland

The Chief Inspectorate of Agricultural and Food Products Trade Quality (IJHARS) informed on Facebook about another detention on the Polish border. This time it's about a batch of marmalades with a full weight of 1,200 kg. The decision to prohibit the placing on the marketplace in Poland was taken by the IJHARS branch in Krakow. As stated in the Communication of 27 February, this decision was given immediate enforceability.

What raised the concerns of the inspectors?

The retained marmalade has been contested due to "many irregularities in labelling and the presence of unauthorised ingredients". The inspectors pointed out the deficiency of compliance with the standards in force to defend consumer health. In practice, this means that the product could pose a hazard to those who might consume it.

Food from Ukraine under IJHARS’s glass

A summary of IJHARS' activities in 2024 shows that food products from Ukraine are among the most frequently controlled. From January to the end of November 69 715 batches of agri-food products imported into Poland were checked. Among them, the most bans were on products from Ukraine – as many as 161 refused decisions for 195 lots of goods.

Which countries and products are the most controlled?

After Ukraine, the most reservations afraid products from China (16 parties and 6 decisions) and Britain (14 parties and 14 decisions). Among the products most frequently placed under the supervision of inspectors are:

  • processed fruit and vegetables,
  • oilseeds,
  • fish and fish preparations,
  • fresh fruit and vegetables.

Why is food control so important?

Food quality control is simply a key component of public wellness protection. Unacceptable ingredients, incorrect marking or non-compliance with standards can lead to serious consequences for consumers. In the case of detained marmalades from Ukraine, inspectors will guarantee that a product which does not meet the requirements does not scope Polish tables.

What does this mean for the Polish consumer?

For the average Pole, IJHARS' actions mean above all a greater sense of security. With rigorous controls, we can be certain that the food available in stores meets the highest standards. At the same time, it is worth paying attention to the origin of the products and their labelling to avoid possible risks.

Summary

Stopping a batch of marmalades from Ukraine is another example of how crucial it is to control food quality at borders. IJHARS' activities aim not only to defend the marketplace but above all to defend consumers' health. It is worth following the inspector messages to keep up with information on products that may pose a risk.
