The Military Garrison Court in Lublin acquitted 25-year-old soldier Karol S., who gave a series of shots at the border with Belarus in March 2024. The D.A. accused him of overstepping his rights and endangering the lives of migrants and another officers.

However, the court considered that military action was within the limits of its duties. As justice Radosław Hunek stressed, the soldier carried out the task of protecting the border during severe incidents involving aggressive migrants. It was besides recalled that a period later a Polish soldier was killed in the same area with a knife.

According to investigators, Charles S. gave 12 shots along the border road, where there were migrants, border guards and military. The suspect himself claimed from the beginning that these were informing shots fired in a safe direction after earlier calls to halt.

The conviction is not final.
