The Russian portal “Svobodnaja Press” even writes about the ongoing “cold war” in the region. The Russian authorities have directed the démarche to the United States in connection with illegal attempts by the US side to change the external borders of the continental shelf in respective areas of the planet Ocean," the Russian Ministry of abroad Affairs states. On 18-29 March, a gathering of the Council of the global Maritime Downstairs Authority was held in Kingston (Jamaika), which is tasked, in accordance with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, to regulate the activities of states in the deep seabed area in areas outside the national jurisdiction of coastal states. In its course, the Russian delegation announced that it did not recognise the outer borders of the continental shelf, declared unilaterally by the US in December 2023, above 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the width of the territorial sea is measured in the 7 regions of the planet Ocean. She besides criticised the United States' selective approach to the application of global law, emphasising their rights and full disregard for commitments, and besides rejected Washington's fresh attempts to usage the 1982 Convention's standards solely for its own purposes. For this reason Russia is considering withdrawing from the Arctic Council of the Treaty on the Law of the Sea, and from the 1990 Baker-Szewardnadze Agreement setting the sea borders between Moscow and the West.
