On 27 November 2023, in the Podpoznan Forest, a tragic crime took place, which shook the full country. Serhii T., a Ukrainian citizen, murdered his wife and 2 daughters, then reported to the police. The man's trial went before the Poznań territory Court in May 2024 and ended with a life sentence.
Crime
The crime occurred in 1 of the houses in Puszczyków, where investigators found the bodies of a female and her 2 daughters. They were all strangled. First the parent was murdered and then the children; girls aged 4.5 and 1.5. At the time of the crime at home, there was a teenage boy of a female from a erstwhile relationship. He slept in his area on the ground floor. The accused Serhia T. was going to tell him his parent and sisters were in the hospital.
Process
The Serhia T. trial began before the Poznań territory Court in May 2024. The suspect initially confessed to the murder, but at the last trial he presented a completely different version of the events and denied that he was the perpetrator. In her closing speech, the prosecution requested the suspect to be punished for life imprisonment and requested the court to order the court to prohibit conditional release of the perpetrator, taking into account the ‘bestial, inhumane manner of action of the accused’.
Judgment
The Poznań territory Court ruled that Serhia T. was guilty of killing 3 people. justice Daniel Jurkiewicz stressed that, given the evidence collected in this case, the guilt and the actions of the accused raised no doubt. The court found that the suspect acted methodically, was geared towards killing his wife and his children, striving for effective implementation. He was violent, ruthless, especially with respect to children whom he besides utilized force against.
Special Cruelty
The prosecution accused the suspect of execution with peculiar cruelty, but the court found that the accused could not be attributed to the peculiar cruelty. The justice pointed out that “the concept of peculiar cruelty has not yet reached its statutory definition. This definition can only be shaped on the basis of doctrine and case law.” The court held that the defendant's conduct was directed at the prompt death task for each of the victims, and was not intended to abuse them in any way.
Penalties
The court considered that only a life conviction would be adequate and fair in this case. justice Daniel Jurkiewicz stressed that the suspect acted methodically, was committed to his intent of killing his wife and his children, he sought effective implementation. He was violent, ruthless, especially with respect to children whom he besides utilized force against. judgement given on Monday by the Poznań territory Court is not valid.
Crime statistics
According to police data, 154 cases of killings were reported in Poland in 2022, a 15% decrease compared to the erstwhile year. According to the Ministry of Justice, in 2022 123 sentences of life imprisonment were issued in Poland, which represents a 10% decrease compared to the erstwhile year.
Justice seems to have been fulfilled in this tragic case. Serhii T. was sentenced to life imprisonment for the execution of his wife and 2 daughters. This judgement is appropriate and fair, given the circumstances of this crime.
