President Zabrze cancelled. An early election is coming

A referendum was held in Zabrze last Sunday, May 11th. The residents of the city decided to dismiss president Agnieszka Rupniewska. There will so be an early presidential election. In turn, the referendum on the city council was declared invalid due to besides low attendance.


The participants of the referendum received 2 ballots: 1 concerning the dismissal of president Rupniewska before the end of her word of office, and the another concerning the cancellation of the city council.

116,9 1000 people were eligible to vote. In order for the referendum on the city president to be important, it had to be attended by over 3/5 people who voted in the second circular of the 2024 presidential election.

This threshold was 25.9 1000 votes. In the Sunday referendum, 29,207 valid votes were cast, of which 27,161 voted in favour of the cancellation of Rupniewska and 2,046 opposed. This means that the referendum on this substance was binding and that there would be an early presidential election.

Zabrze city president cancelled


Agnieszka Rupniewska took the position of president Zabrz in 2024, following a triumph in the election, moving from the letter of the Civic Coalition, although she herself does not belong to any political party. In the second circular of elections, she won 57.85 percent of the votes, defeating Margaret Manka-Szulik, who had ruled Zabrze since 2006.

However, the referendum concerning the cancellation of the city council did not meet the attendance request as valid votes were cast 29 106, of which 26,551 were in favour of the appeal and 2,555 against. In order for the referendum to be important, about 29.6,000 votes were needed and the 3/5 voter turnout threshold was not reached.

Initiators of the referendum accused president Agnieszka Rupniewska of carrying out group dismissals in local units, increases in local fees, resignation from the organization of cyclical cultural events and the extended privatisation process of Górnik Zabrze club.
