The operational commander of the armed forces is in fact the first pilot of the Polish armed forces – said president Karol Nawrocki during the ceremony. Gen. Dyw. Pil. Ireneusz Nowak received present the act of appointment for 1 of the most crucial positions in the Polish Army. Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasizes that it is no coincidence that for the first time the function of operational commander includes the general of aviation.
The ceremony at the Presidential Palace was attended by Deputy Prime Minister, Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, General Wiesław Kukuła, Chief of Staff of the General of the Polish Army, and resigning from the post of operational commander of the General of Arms Maciej Klisz, who will presume the function of chief of staff in Allied NATO Force Command in Brunssum.
President Karol Nawrocki after the appointment of General Nowak stressed the merits of both the fresh and the current operational commander. – You are generals who have matured, trained and gained military experience in free Poland. You were building relations in the North Atlantic Alliance," said the commander of the armed forces. Karol Nawrocki pointed to Gen. Nowak's professional path, including his studies at the prestigious US Air Force Academy in Maxwell. We have a flesh and blood pilot ahead of us. Polish pilot means courage, determination and decision-making ability in a fraction of a second. The operational commander of the armed forces is in fact the first pilot of the armed forces of the Republic," said the President.
Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed that it was not accidental for the pilot to be commander of DORSZ for the first time. "The steel uniform in this position is suitable for the challenges of today, for the protection of airspace and the dangers of ballistic missiles and drones," said the head of the MON. He besides stressed that Gen. Nowak could make the most hard decisions as a fighter pilot, “being alone, advanced in the air”, so he would have the courage to make those decisions in the Operations Command. He recalled that the general had an experience of 3.6 1000 hours of raid, of which 2.5 1000 hours on F-16. – The last different flight we could observe is bringing F-35 to 32th Tactical Aviation Base in Łask and welcoming them to Polish land – the Deputy Prime Minister recalled.

Gen. div. pil. Ireneusz Nowak is simply a postgraduate of the Air Force Higher School of Officers in Dęblin on the direction of pilot of supersonic aircraft. He besides graduated from the National Defence Academy (now the Academy of War Art) and postgraduate defensive policy studies at the US Air Force Academy in Maxwell. He served in the 11th Fighter Aviation Regiment in Wrocław, 3rd Air Defence Corps in Wrocław, 10th Tactical Aviation Squadron and 32nd Tactical Aviation Base in Łask, 2nd Tactical Aviation Wing in Poznań, and in the Air Force Command and General Command of Types of Armed Forces in Warsaw.
In his career, he went through many levels of military service. He was, among others, the Air Key Commander, the Squadron Commander, the Air Force Group Commander, the Head of Tactical Aviation, the Base Commander and the Deputy Commander, and then the 2nd Tactical Aviation Wing Commander in Poznań. On January 3, 2022, he was appointed head of the Air Force Board – Deputy Air Force Inspector. On March 1, 2023, he took up the function of Air Force Inspector at the General Command of the RSZ. As of October 20, 2025, he served as deputy commander general of the RSZ.
Gen. Nowak is simply a master class pilot and actively participates in aviation training. It has over 3.6 1000 hours spent behind the rudders of military jet aircraft, of which over 2.5 1000 – F-16 aircraft.
