XXXII economical Forum in Karpacz was held under the slogan: "New values of the Old Continent – Europe at the threshold of change". The organizer of the event was Foundation Institute for east Studiesh – economical Forum. The debate "ESG – standard in modern business?" was part of the theme. They participated in the panel Fabrizio Zucca – prof. Bocconi University, Marcin Foot – associate of the Board for Investment and Organisation in Lidl Poland (network of discount stores in Europe), Michał Perlik – Executive manager for Financial Management in Orlene (multi-energy contract), Arkadius Mierzwa – manager for Communication and Sustainable improvement in Jeronimo Martins Poland (owner of Ladybug stores) and Tomasz Miracle – president of the Management Board, Jastrzębska Węglowa (JSW). average was Ursula Józwiak – president of the Management Board XBW Foundation of Ignacy Krasicki.
Ursula Józwiak – president of the Management Board XBW Foundation of Ignacy Krasicki, the title of the introduction to the discussion "ESG – standard in modern business?", noted that ESG, i.e. the factors underlying the ratings and evaluations of non-financial companies, states and another organisations, become a kind of determinant and direction in which all modern economical operators are heading. The request for these changes seems inevitable. Modern planet (mainly directives) European Union) forces corporate owners to introduce certain standards. Will this be the case with ESG?
During the discussions, representatives of the large business planet mostly confirmed their willingness to study on environmental impacts (E), social work (S) activities and corporate governance (G). Smaller companies may have problems, which are just preparing to study and will be integrated into sustainable supply chains.
According to Fabrizio Zuccy – prof. Bocconi University, developed from the social work of business and philanthropy, the assumptions of the ESG aid prevent environmental, social and corporate governance threats. As he stressed, today, social work is not just philanthropy, it is simply a part of business and businesses request to change their model of action to be sustainable organisations. In the Italian scholar's opinion, he repents of the belief that sustainable improvement is good for wealthy and large organisations, while the full production and supply chain will should be reported, which is not easy, including for contractors.
"What is the biggest challenge in introducing uniform standards for measuring and reporting the ESG? Is it besides much regulation?” – He wondered Marcin Foot – associate of the Board of Investment and Organisation in Lidl Poland. In his opinion, it is besides early to make a clear diagnosis, due to the fact that most entities are not yet required to study non-financially according to the fresh Social Reporting Standards (SRS). “No little sustainable improvement is inscribed in Lidel’s DNA and the corp understands that protecting the Earth is simply a priority, that it requires all changes in many elements of conduct.” – Declared Marcin Foot – associate of the Board of Investment and Organisation in Lidl Poland, stressing that the company has long been prepared to implement the ESG idea. He said Lidl presently published another study on corporate social responsibility, which presents strategies and actions related to green governance, 80% simplification (and in case of Lidl Poland Even by 94 percent) carbon footprint, a large deal of emphasis is besides placed on, for example, the extended prevention of workers' health. – "Lidl patented e.g. mouse pads from a recyclate, obtained from plastics, utilized in shops and has already built the first object whose roof is covered with material produced in this technology. This is the best evidence that eco-friendly activities can pay off.” – He claimed Marcin Foot – associate of the Board of Investment and Organisation in Lidl Poland.
Arkadius Mierzwa, manager of Communications and Sustainable improvement at Jeronimo Martins Polska stressed that the company does not want to bid with competition for ESG activities. “Sustainable development, growth makes sense erstwhile working together.” – He thinks Arkadius Mierzwa, manager for Communication and Sustainable improvement Jeronimo Martins Poland. After that, he noted that the environmental impact was best counted and the easiest way to show it, hence the dominance of the letter E. However, the letter S becomes crucial due to the fact that everything changed on 24 February 2022 the military assault of the Russian Federation on Ukraine and related assistance. – ‘The Ladybug Network which belongs to Jeronimo Martins Poland These are 80,000 employees, and with families, they're about 350-400,000 people, they're besides 1,200 companies, cooperating with discounts. And that is the scale of the ESG mission. How to ESG invitation specified a large group of participants and co-workers, and how do you calculate what this process does to their lives? – He wondered Arkadius Mierzwa, manager for Communication and Sustainable improvement Jeronimo Martins Poland.
According to Michał Perlik, the Executive manager for Financial Management in Orlen, the regulations on the ESG are needed due to the fact that they let companies to decently measure and compare. As he noted, everyone wants to avoid greenwashing (marketing manipulations pretending to be ecological actions), a previously rather common phenomenon. The common rules are beneficial to all stakeholders, as they let to learn what actions businesses take. Michał Perlik, the Executive manager for Financial Management in Orlen noted that public information would require effort as measurements and impacts should be made at a number of locations of organisations. In his view, the top challenge will be the environmental factor, as green transformation activities require the engagement of the top individual and financial resources. He besides recalled that Orlen was the first Polish company to announce during Economic Forum in Karpacz ‘green return’ and entered the decarbonisation path.
Tomasz Miracle – president of the Management Board of Jastrzębska Węglowa/JSW stressed that it is full subject to the “Green Deal” principles imposed by directives European Union, which means that by 2050 it must be 100% climate neutral. She is aware of this, which is why, as the first mining group, she published an ESG study in Poland. The transformation, in which the company is in, requires deep reflection of all business processes. This is simply a complete change of approach within close business and a look at the full supply chain. Jastrzębska Węglowa implements the ESG strategy with conviction, not with coercion, due to the fact that it wants to change the region for the better. The environmental strategy of the JSW Group by 2030, adopted in February 2022, is evidence of the integration of the Jastrzębska Coal Company into global climate policy.
