Presidential Elections in Poland: 2 Marches, 2 Worlds

Last Sunday, at noon, 2 parallel marches were held in the Polish capital, organized by the staff of the counter-candidates for President: Rafał Trzaskowski and Karol Nawrocki. This is the first specified situation after 1989, that at the same time 2 marches of competing candidates will take place in Warsaw.

The March of Rafał Trzaskowski, called the “Great Dream of Patriots”, began in Bank Square, from where the participants crossed Marszałkowska Street to the Constitution Square. The march is attended by prominent politicians, including Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz ( MON chief), talker of the Sejm Simon Hołownia, Deputy Marshal of the legislature Magdalena Biejat, and winner of the fresh presidential elections in Romania Nicusor Dan.

The participants of the march sang an anthem, carrying white-red flags, and any besides EU flags. There were banners, including Trzaskowski's electoral slogan: “All Poland forward”. Rafał Trzaskowski, erstwhile starting the “Great Patriot March” in Warsaw, said: “Now or never. It's about time she won honesty, integrity, justice, the truth. That is what these elections are about."

The competitive “March for Poland” of supporters of Karol Nawrocki besides started at 12.00. Nawrocki encouraged participation, writing on social media: “Let us show that we want an ambitious, proud, safe Poland. Without censorship and the unification of Donald Tusk". The participants of the Nawrocki march gathered at the de Gaulle roundabout and switched to Castle Square. Among them were leading PiS politicians, including president Jarosław Kaczyński.

Jarosław Kaczyński besides urged on platform X: “Meet us on +March For Poland+ and show that we care about Poland strong, safe and ambitious. Poland of our dreams. All hands on deck! Without commitment, there will be no success." The participants of the march had with them white-red flags and banners expressing support for Nawrocki, raising the cry “God, honor and homeland”.

The second circular of the presidential elections, in which Rafał Trzaskowski and Karol Nawrocki will face, will take place on 1 June. Presidential elections in Poland are among the most crucial political events in the country. According to the Central Statistical Office (GUS), around 18.6 million people took part in the 2020 presidential election, representing about 64.5% of those entitled to vote.

Among the voters, 68.2% were women and 31.8% were men. The most votes were cast in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship (more than 2.5 million), and at least in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship (more than 430 thousand). Presidential elections in Poland are an crucial political event, which takes place all 5 years.

This year, in the presidential election, 11 candidates compete. Rafal Trzaskowski and Karol Nawrocki have the best chances of winning. According to the polls, Rafał Trzaskowski has about 45% of support and Karol Nawrocki has about 30%. The final results of the elections will only be known after the vote on 1 June.
