Hundreds of civilians died as a consequence of an attack by the Sudanese army on a marketplace in the state of North Darfur, in the west of Sudan - a group of legal activists, Emergency Lawyers, reported on Tuesday, documenting civilian casualties lasting for almost 2 years of civilian war in that country.
The group stated in a communication that "Sudanese military combat aircraft committed a terrible massacre, making a blind air strike to a marketplace in Northern Darfur". "A 100 civilians died and tens were seriously injured" - she said.
Due to the failure of the telecommunications network in the Darfur region, the AFP was incapable to verify these data.
Civil War
In Sudan As of mid-April 2023, there has been a conflict between government troops and the Paramilitary fast Support Force (RSF). The war broke out as a consequence of a dispute in their alliance which had 2 years earlier overthrown the West-backed government and took over. The main characters of the conflict are General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who, after the 2021 coup, headed the country, and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo - in the past 1 of the more influential figures of the Sudanese army, and since 2023 chief commander of the RSF.
The RSF forces, which are accused by the United States of genocide in Darfur, have accused the army of being liable for the Monday massacre.
Although paramilitary forces deployed high-tech drones in Darfur, the army dominates the air thanks to combat aircraft that regularly attack RSF positions in the region.
