An Italian investigation into the assassination of writer Sigfrido Ranucci entered a fresh phase. Valter Lavitola was arrested as a fishy in an attack order, and Fratelli d'Italia reminds Elly Schlein of her words about an alleged threat to democracy under the right.
Arrest for the assassination of a journalist
Valter Lavitola, an entrepreneur and erstwhile publisher journalist, was arrested in connection with an investigation into Sigfrido Ranucci's assassination, moving an investigative program "Report" in Rai 3. Accusing the climate created by the right was easy to sound in the European salons, but the investigation is moving towards individual connections and an alleged commission, not government accountability.
The Italian right has long been the mark of labels to close the debate before facts. We've already written about this erstwhile Giorgia Meloni explained, why it's right-wing, referring to the rooting, work and defence of European civilization. The left prefers a simpler scheme: erstwhile the right governs, democracy is by definition to be suspected. That language is convenient, but it can be helpless with an investigation.
Freedom of speech without propaganda
There's no reason for triumph. The assassination of an investigative writer is simply a serious matter, regardless of who his work concerns and who he is politically with along the way. The State has a work to defend journalists, detect perpetrators and follow procedures. The safety of media people cannot be props for organization theater.
That's why Ranucci's case hits the liberal left. First, there is simply a large diagnosis of the right as a threat to freedom. A policy that starts with a description ends with a problem erstwhile papers appear on the table.
For Poland this communicative is clear. In our case too, the right individual is eager to describe the language of moral panic, and all crisis immediately attempts to turn into an accusation against conservatives. It's a method to disengage a dispute over national interest, safety and real elite power. Italy shows that the state must go the another way: first the facts, then the evaluation. Without this, democracy becomes just a decoration for propaganda.
Time for responsibility
Lavitola remains a suspect. Gomes Clesio Tavares is, according to Italian reports, wanted and previously detained persons identified as alleged attackers of the attack. Ranucci, who has lived under protection for years, has the right to safety and full explanation. There's no area for organization calculations at this point.
However, there is area for accounting for the words of politicians. If a left-wing leader uses an attack on a writer to strike a democratically elected government, and the investigation leads in a different direction, honesty needs to be corrected. The right doesn't gotta apologize for just being in charge. The Left should yet realize that the importance of the state begins where the ideological impulse ends.
