Since 11 April, the information about the alleged "mass reaching for Polish citizenship" by Ukrainians has been widely distributed in Polish social media. This was based on 1 article from the Ukrainian European fact Portal. It is simply a text from 4 April entitled "Why Polish politicians will shortly gotta ease their anti-Ukrainian statements".
Right hand scares the Ukrainians. "Mass accept citizenship"?
Screens with the title of the text itself appeared on right-wing profiles on social media. "Ukrainian media warns: Ukrainians will massively scope for Polish citizenship," writes Confederate politician Paweł Usiedek, associate of the Board of the National Movement.
His communicative is duplicated by the Confederate – Stalowa Wola profile, and inactive further goes the Wrocław National Movement. On this profile it is suggested that the Ukrainian language may become authoritative in Wrocław.
The said Usądek warns that "the distribution of citizenship to immigrants like candy will end in destabilising public life in Poland". It announces that the parties will search more consideration from this group. In comments, netizens already foretell the establishment of Ukrainian parties and deciding on the results of the Ukrainian vote.
Ukrainians and Polish citizenship. statistic contradict massiness
The Concret24 portal refers to statistic and shows that the message announced by the Confederation and RN is misinformation, calculated to awaken dislike of Ukrainians. It besides recalls that certain conditions request to be met in order to gain Polish citizenship.
As the Ministry of abroad Affairs, journalists note that for the last 10 years Polish citizenship has gained precisely 41,983 Ukrainians. This gives only 4,000 people a year. With 1,55 million Ukrainian citizens in our country, this is simply a very modest number, which is in clear contradiction with the thesis on "mass-based citizenship".
Ukrainians would not have the chance to influence elections in Poland in any way. These 40,000 Ukrainians have no votes of 1.55 million, which the Confederacy had to win in 2023 to cross the electoral threshold. 40,000 votes could be adequate to bring a large organization MP into the Sejm, but only in case all Ukrainians vote from 1 district. As we know, however, they are scattered all over Poland.
Who can apply for Polish citizenship?
A foreigner may apply for Polish citizenship who:
- he has been in Poland continuously and legally for at least 2 years on the basis of permits he obtained in Poland as a refugee;
- for at least 3 years, continuously and legally, he has been in Poland on the basis of permanent residence permits, long-term residence permits of the European Union or the right of permanent residence, has a unchangeable and regular origin of income in Poland and has a legal title to occupy a dwelling;
- at least 10 years of permanent and legal residence in Poland; he has a permanent residence permit, a long-term residence licence of the European Union or a permanent residence right; he has a unchangeable and regular origin of income in Poland and a legal title to occupy a residential residence.
Importantly, the first of these options does not open after 2 years in our country. A "permanent residence permit" is crucial, which can only be applied for 5 years after the position of refugee. The second way requires respective hard conditions, including a paper confirming the cognition of the Polish language at intermediate level.
Of course, you can number on the president to grant citizenship. However, statistic show that this is an increasingly little popular way (about a 1000 cases per year for Ukrainian citizens).
