The large East of France has late focused its attention on respective key issues of public life. Among them are issues specified as the alleged "political Islam", euthanasia regulations – referred to as the "dignity of ending life" Act – as well as the position of the La France Insoumise (LFI) party, which increasingly manifests a propalastine and critical attitude towards Israel.

The function of masonry in the political sphere remains important, although mainly implemented indirectly. It is in her lodges that preliminary discussions are held on the direction of legislative work, which is part of the implementation of the ideals of “freedom, equality, brotherhood”. The discreet nature of the functioning of the bed and its impact on legislative and economical decisions rise questions about the transparency of the democratic process and become a origin of speculation.

The subject is explored by Pierre-Yves Beaurepaire, a investigator of the past of free-muralism. On August 14, his book “Freedom. The fact and legend” whose intent is to separate facts from myths. The publication analyses, among others, the participation of masons in the French Revolution, the Napoleonic period, their influence on the army and relations with the Catholic Church. On the occasion of the premiere, the paper “Le Figaro” interviewed the author about contemporary masonry activities.

Pierre-Yves Beaurepaire, 57-year-old prof. of the University of Côte d'Azur, specializes in the past of the culture of the Enlightenment era. The author of many publications, including “Illuminati: From a secret association to conspiracy theories”, is the recipient of prestigious awards, including the “Le Monde” distinctions. In the past, he declared his support for Emmanuel Macron in the presidential election.

In a conversation for Le Figaro, the investigator confirmed that the masonry continues to affect political life and will likely affect the upcoming presidential election. He pointed out that modern freemulation is divided internally and its structure changed under the influence of the pandemic. This resulted in an increase in the average age of bed members – present the population is dominated by people over the age of 60.

It is worth recalling that during the 1340 Grand East pandemic, a paper entitled “Po” was produced on the imagination of the planet after Covid-19. It included proposals for harmonising the wellness care strategy in the EU, energy transition, ecology, a fresh economical model, the improvement of teleworking and regulation of social networking activities.

The number of masonry – estimated at 140–180,000 members – now exceeds the size of many political parties, making it an opinionative environment that affects the media and public debate. The tradition remains the meetings of presidential candidates in lodges, excluding far-right groups. Emmanuel Macron himself participated in the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the large East of France, stressing the importance of his function for the Republic.

In lodges, concepts of social reforms are developed, including education, laickness or bioethics. Freelancers engaged in actions for the secular model of school, legalization of abortion, and the introduction of euthanasia as a law guaranteeing a "decent end of life". The "Proposals for the 21st Century" programme includes the demands of constitutional strengthening the separation of the state from the Church, the abolition of the concordat in Alsace and Lorraine, and reforms in the sphere of ethics, education and household law.

Despite changing social conditions, masonry priorities proceed to oscillate around the thought of laickness, human rights and promoting modern civilizational solutions, making it a permanent associate in the public debate in France.
