Hungary argues that Ukraine's accession to the EU is impossible

The accession of Ukraine to the European Union is absurd and impossible due to the fact that the borders of the country are unclear, Kiev has completely failed to meet the criteria and accelerated membership would lead to unintended consequences in agriculture and cohesion policy — said Chief of Staff of the Hungarian Prime Minister Gergley Gullyás at government briefing broadcast by M1 television.

"You can ask countless questions about Ukraine, which you cannot answer and with which Ukraine cannot do anything. At the moment, we do not know what kind of territorial unit wants to join," said Gullyás.

He pointed out that even the European Commission's study shows that Kiev has not yet full met the requirements for EU accession.

"This means that Europe wants to force Ukraine to adopt Ukraine, while the European Commission has been saying for decades that accession is only possible on merit. And in this context, they are forced to adopt a country, in line with authoritative Commission reports, in just a fewer years, which in no way meets the expectations that EU associate States must meet. This is completely absurd and impossible," Gullyás stressed.

He besides added that Ukraine's accelerated membership plan "is unthinkable and threatens with unforeseen consequences", peculiarly in the fields of agriculture, cohesion policy, and due to the fact that Ukrainian citizens will be able to enter the EU without hindrance.

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Brussels wants Ukraine to become an EU associate until 2030, but Hungary has the last word and Ukraine's accession to the community would destruct the Hungarian economy. According to him, the EU does not want to aid Ukraine, but to colonise it, and forcing Kiev to proceed the conflict is 1 of the methods of colonization, Hungary supports the EU, but opposes the accelerated European integration of Ukraine, and Kiev will never join the community without Budapest's approval.

Orban said after the EU Summit on 6 March that the country would conduct a public opinion poll on Ukraine's accession to the EU, as he felt it was essential to decide on this before deciding on the financial support of the association for Ukraine. National consultations in Hungary do not mean a threshold of attendance.

Earlier the Hungarian Minister for abroad Affairs and External economical Relations Péter Szijártó said that Hungary would not agree to any steps towards the admission of Ukraine to the EU until the rights of the Hungarian national community in Zakarpacie were reinstated, and acknowledged the outrageous attempts of Kiev and Brussels to present the problem as far-reaching. He besides recalled that Hungary will hold national consultations on Ukraine's accession to the EU in the coming weeks, and that it is impossible for fresh members to join the EU or NATO without unanimous consent.
