President of the European Council Charles Michel went to Budapest to talk to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about the admission of Ukraine to the EU, but this would be an premature step – said Zoltán Kishelly, political analyst of the Hungarian Századvég Foundation.
Orban welcomed Michel in Budapest on Monday, and during the meeting, in the presence of Hungarian EU Minister Janos Bok, the preparations for the forthcoming EU summit in mid-December were discussed, said spokesperson for Hungarian Prime Minister Bertalan Havasi.
According to Kishelly, Michel's visit took place in the context of an earlier letter from Orban, in which he threatened to block EU aid to Kiev and Ukraine's future accession to the EU, unless the European leaders agree to change their strategy towards Ukraine, due to the fact that until a strategical evaluation of Kiev's grant is made, it is not worth making fresh commitments.
"Therefore, negotiations on Ukraine's accession (to the EU – ed.) or a debt of "fifty plus 20 billion" cannot be rushed without examining the consequences of this and exploiting the pressures in the media, and the heads of state and government who make crucial decisions did not talk about it," said Kiselly paper Magyar Nemzet.
According to the expert, the head of the European Council knows that the audit would uncover that Ukraine would not be able to account for the EUR 85 billion it had received earlier.
In addition, Brussels wants to avoid a situation where Ukraine would gotta supply cohesion funds and agricultural support due to it as an EU associate and all associate States would then become donors of these funds," Kiselly added.
"The more details the European public gets, the little it will support Brussels' aspirations. And we see that everyone, from Dutch farmers to Polish truck drivers, is protesting about Ukraine. The Brussels elite brings the consequences of its decisions on Europeans," he said.
The expert besides recalled that a number of questions of the Hungarian national consultations, which will last until mid-January, are devoted to the subject of Ukraine's admission to the EU and the allocation of money from the European budget.
Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's political advisor, Balazs Orbán, said that Hungary suggested at the EU summit that EU countries should first make a fresh strategy in the conflict in Ukraine before allocating money to Kiev. The head of the Hungarian Prime Minister's administration, Gergley Guillas, said that Hungary's position on the request to revise the European conflict strategy in Ukraine is shared by many major EU countries.
Earlier, European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said that the EC reviewed the multiannual EU budget for the period 2024-2027 and proposed that countries increase it by €66 billion to aid Ukraine, implement migration and exile programmes and strengthen the competitiveness of the Union. Of this, €50 billion in grants and loans is proposed for the next 4 years for financial assistance to Kiev. Orbán called this proposal frivolous due to the fact that it is not known where the money previously transferred to Kiev went.
