Warsaw: 18-year-olds from Ukraine cheated by NFC

Two 18-year-old Ukrainian citizens were detained by police officers of the Department for Combating economical Crime and the KSP Intelligence Division. Young men are suspected of fraud involving unauthorised access to information through electronic payments. Together and in agreement, they paid money from ATMs from crime utilizing NFC technology.

How did NFC fraud work?

Police received reports from respective banks regarding crimes committed utilizing NFC (Near Field Communication). The method of fraud was that criminals called bank customers, claiming to be representatives of financial institutions. They offered attractive benefits, e.g. advanced returns from investment funds to get victims to install a peculiar app on the phone.

Then, utilizing manipulation techniques, they urged customers to apply a payment card to the telephone and give the PIN code. The victim did not realize that at the same time the cheaters were waiting at the ATM and paying money from her account, utilizing an online impulse. The transaction looked like it was executed by a legitimate account holder.

Arrest of perpetrators and secured evidence

After analyzing the reports, police identified and detained 2 18-year-old Ukrainian citizens. As it was established, they utilized this method to get bank customers to install malware and bargain money from them.

To date, it is known that 1 of the banks has lost out of this title PLN 70 thousand. Losses of another institutions are being determined.

During the search, the detainees were found and secured:

  • mobile phones,
  • several Polish and abroad payment cards,
  • cash in close amount PLN 28 thousand.

Consequences for Suspects

Young men were charged with fraud involving unauthorised access to information. At the request of the prosecutor, the court applied to them temporary detention for 3 months.
