War in Ukraine: Russia's position and peace negotiations

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for Kremlin Dmitry Pieskov made a message in which he stated that the end of the war in Ukraine was a complex and demanding process of approximation of positions of all parties active in the negotiations. Pieskov stressed that Russia is opposed to the deployment of peacekeeping forces from Europe in Ukraine and besides announced that Russia is conducting talks with the US, but not with another countries.

According to Pieskov, war ending scenarios should not be made public, as work on all scenarios should proceed in silence. Kremlin spokesperson added that the Kremlin will not publically comment on any of these scenarios, which may propose that Russia is curious in maintaining a sense of secrecy around peace negotiations.

Pieskov stated that Russia is continuing its dialog on the war in Ukraine with the United States, but does not engage with European countries or Ukraine. This may mean that Russia is trying to keep a good relation with the US while maintaining a distance with another European countries and Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, is open to talks with all parties, including European countries and Ukraine. This may propose that Russia is ready to settle, but provided it is simply a settlement on its terms.

The figures for the war in Ukraine are alarming. According to the UN, since the beginning of the conflict, more than 3.5 million people have left Ukraine and 6.5 million people inside the country request humanitarian assistance. Moreover, according to the global Committee of the Red Cross, since the beginning of the war, more than 12,000 people have been killed or injured.

It is worth recalling that the European Union and the United States imposed economical sanctions on Russia to block the Russian economy and force Russia to suspend its arms in Ukraine. However, Russia has not given up the war and continues its military action in Ukraine.

In the future, it is not excluded that Russia will effort to renegotiate the conditions for a peaceful resolution of the conflict, but for now, the war in Ukraine remains the biggest challenge for global security.
