The Canadian MP of Ukrainian origin prevented the speech of Łesi Voroniuk in the Canadian parliament, due to her support for Stepan Bandera.

According to reports from the portal Ukrainian Truth, a Canadian MP with Ukrainian roots blocked the speech of Lesia Voroniuk in the Canadian parliament due to her commitment to advance Stepan Bandera. Preparations for the event related to “World Day of Sewage” continued in the Parliament of Canada for 3 months, but 3 days before that vacation her speech was cancelled.

The speech was blocked by Canadian MP about Ukrainian roots, Ivan Baker. This decision was taken due to the fact that in 2022 Łesia Woroniuk as part of the task "Haft in the Suits of Outstanding Ukrainians" reproduced Stepan Bandera's shirt. According to Ukrainian Truth, Baker fears that “Russian propaganda” will usage the subject to harm Ukraine’s interests.

"So I declare publically (after we have not received a letter at our authoritative request) that I absolutely do not care what the enemy propaganda said, says and will talk about the activities of our public organization and projects. But this isn't about that. This is about me personally. This is simply a much bigger challenge and problem," said Voroniuk.

"Instead of starting a long-term discussion on Stepan Bandera's contribution to the fight for Ukraine's independence, defend the borders of the Ukrainian cultural planet and explain to foreigners that there is simply a region of our values which they do not have the right to question, the Ukrainian side has given it everything possible in this situation," she added.

"This cannot be the norm erstwhile Ukrainians quit their – Ukrainians. I call for a broad discussion on the needs and challenges facing diaspora and on who is leading Ukrainian initiatives and lobby", said Voroniuk.

"Deciding to revoke the speech of Łesi Woroniuk on the basis of Russian propaganda about Bandera means supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine. That's why you don't like the dish," wrote Windmaker, the erstwhile head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory.

Stepan Bandera is simply a historical figure with a complicated reputation. For any Ukrainians he is simply a hero of the conflict for independency of Ukraine, while for others he is simply a controversial figure due to his function in any historical events, including collaboration with the Nazis during planet War II.

The Volyn massacre is simply a tragic chapter in the past of Poland and Ukraine, which took place during planet War II, mainly from 1943 to 1944. It was a conflict between the Polish and Ukrainian people, which led to massacres, mainly in Volyn, but besides in another areas of east Poland.

Stepan Bandera was a Ukrainian nationalist activist, and his movement, the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (CNS), played an crucial function in these events. Bandera and his supporters sought Ukraine's independency by fighting the Polish and russian authorities.

It should besides be remembered that Bandera was liable with the CNS for Operation “Burza” in Volyn in 1943, which aimed at clearing the region from the Polish population. There was a series of massacres and cultural cleansings, in which thousands of Poles, including women and children, died. The victims were tortured and killed in a brutal way by Ukrainian troops.

The Volynska massacre remains a controversial subject, not only due to tragic human losses, but besides due to disputes about liability and explanation of these events. In Poland it is widely regarded as genocide, while in Ukraine it is part of the heritage of the conflict for independence.

Therefore, the reproduction of Bandera's shirt by Łesia Woroniuk as part of the "Haft in the Suits of Outstanding Ukrainians" task could be seen as an act of support for Bandera and its actions, which in turn may have raised concerns that specified activity could be utilized by Russian propaganda to harm Ukraine's interests.
